Greece: Retirees Moving to Greece - Health Insurance Advice Needed:
Hello!
My name is Artemis, I am a US citizen who lives in Thessalonika, Greece (I'm Greek-American) and my parents just moved here about one year ago. I know in their case they attained local health insurance and pay 8% of what their retirement check is. However, i can try to find out if this applies to everyone, or if it was just my parents because they are dual citizens.
When do you plan to move to Greece? and where do you currently live now.
The one health insurance available here in Greece is called "IKA" and I just found a website of theirs you can check out in English or other languages as well besides Greek. try www.ika.gr then choose the flag of the language you desire.
You can e-mail me if you have any questions, and I'll try to find out more as well. My e-mail is priggipisa@yahoo.com.
Take care and good luck! :)
Greece: Information on moving to Greece:
Hi Steve,
I'm not sure I can offer much help since I live in Thessaloniki, Greece. However, you mentioned a couple business trips to Athens, so wasn't sure if you plan to move to Athens or a nearby city. Are you looking for rental property info for Athens? and school info for your son?
If there is anything I can do to help, feel free to ask. :) By the way, where are you currently from?
Greece: Exploring year in Greece:
If you do consider moving to Athens, one thing you can do is check your Embassy's website for job postings. Just a thought... but Good luck finding something in your field of expertise. :)

Hi, I live in Greece, and know they have Toyota dealerships here, and double checked and found this website for dealerships in Cyprus:
http://motorshow.toyota-europe.com/ dealers/index.asp?country=cy
If the above website doesnt work, you can also go to Toyota's website www.toyota.com and click on worldwide and search for it that way.
I suggest you also get some idea of the cost of the vehicle you'd like in Cyprus. I used to own a RAV4 when I lived in NY, but when I checked prices here in Greece, I found them to be more expensive, not sure if that applies to all Toyota cars or not. Good Luck, Diana
Greece: American School -Thessaloniki:
I've seen some messages and had some ask me if there are any english speaking/american schools in Thessaloniki, and found out there is one called Anatolia American School in Panorama (a suburb of Thessaloniki). All classes are in English, with the exception of Greek being taught as a foreign language.
I moved to Thessaloniki one year ago, so still learning alot, and still adjusting, but if you have any other questions regarding school or anything, please feel free to write, if I dont have the answers, I can sure find them. :) My email is priggipisa@yahoo.com
Greece: Thinking about moving to Greece:
I'm a greek-american who moved here to Thessaloniki Sept. 2001, I can not say it has been an easy transition, but I read your message and wanted to make a comment. Totally agree with the other response you have in that... what you attitude is toward your move here, will make the difference. I've heard some greeks here say... life in Greece is better (implying better then america), my reply to them... is Life is Better... WHEREVER You Make it to be! I really believe that. It's a matter of a decision and an attitude. I don't think you'll have a hard time job wise, because computers is the way to go, however, I don't know much yet about the employment opportunities, so can't help there. Just felt I really needed to share that if you come here with a positive attitude... you can make the difference. Have fun and best wishes in your move (both career and move to Greece).
Greece: Thessaloniki - where do we start:
Hello Ang,
My name is Diana, and I dont know if you saw a previous message I sent you saying I would check out the information regarding schools here. I did find that there is an American School, just as you mentioned, it is in Panorama. The name of the school is Anatolia (my aunt said it's pronounced like Anantolya) so not quite positive about the spelling. Anyway, it has grade school, but I believe goes all the way through high school. If you need more info, feel free to email me at priggipisa@yahoo.com. Good luck! I dont know when you were moving to Greece. I currently live in Greece, moved here one year ago from America (NY).
Greece: Advice For Moving:
Mariava, I'm sorry about the experience you had in Greece with your cat, however, I felt to say that people in greece have pets as a status symbol, or chase rats, is too much of a generalization. I know people who really love their pets, and would be just as devastated as you if they lost them. My brother-in-law for one, that dog is treated like their child... eats the best... not always just leftovers... the dog receives alot of love and attention from both adults and the chidren in the home (teens). My bro-in-law isnt the only one I know... many others. I'm just really sorry for the experience you had, but more so also that you felt others didnt care about their pets the way you did.
Greece: Americans in Thessaloniki???:
Hi Evi,
I'm also greek-american, and as of Sept 2001, I now live in Thessaloniki also. I was born in Greece, but grew up in NY, now live here, but also having a tough time. It was great reading your message, just knowing I'm not the only one... I thought I was just being homesick at first, so would really like contact with other Americans living anywhere in Greece, but especially here in Thessaloniki. If you'd like to write me, my email is priggipisa@yahoo.com. This goes for anyone else in Greece as well.
Greece: relocating to Greece:
Hi Golden Oldie! I'm a greek-american, who grew up in NY, but as of one year ago, married and moved to Thessaloniki in Greece. I will not tell you that the transition was easy, and I am greek, born here, but grew up in America. Please ignore the comments for the ... excuse me.. 2 other brits, who were very negative about not just life, but the people here. I really believe it is all in your attitude. If you come here with a positive attitude, that will make your transition much easier. Come expecting the worst... and you'll get it. Someone here once told me that they believed life in greece is the best, my reply to them was, Life is the best, WHEREVER you make it to be. The people are not pigs, and i'm sorry the other person felt that way-but to make such a generalization-makes me wonder about their attitude in life. Listen, some people you just cant please no matter what-and they will always see the negative side in life generally. I'm not saying it will be easy here, especially alone, but then again, I moved from NY to Florida at one point... and though I loved Florida, it took adjusting-ok but I realize not the same. I will also add... I have no clue what they mean when 2 others here in the forum commented that Greeks dont know much about other countries, the world outside Greece. Are they serious? I have never met so many people who spend so much time watching the news, and they know more about the history and politics of other countries... even more then many of the citizens of those countries. In any country you go to... you will find your variety of people, the friendly and the rude, those who choose to remain ignorant about the world around them and those who are more then interested in the world around them-not just their country. So if you really want to come to Greece, just come with a positive attitude and understand you'll have adjusting, but how easily or hard is sometimes up to us. However, forgive me for saying, do you really want to leave your husband behind? :( haha Maybe a great idea is to come and check out Greece, buy or rent a vacation home, and try at least 3-6 of the year here before you make a final move. Honeslty, my parents will also be moving here (mid 70's) hopefully next year, and though my Dad is looking forward to it very much so, I'm concerned about my Mom adjusting. By the way, buy a tape/book and start sprucing up on your Greek. I don't know what country you currently live, or where in Greece you are considering moving to, but if you'd like a contact here, my email is: priggipisa@yahoo.com. Good luck in whatever you decide! :)
