Nicaragua: Possible Hurricane:

Tropical storm Otto looks like it might be headed your way. Batten down the hatches.

Nicaragua: El Crucero:

I don't live in Nicaragua yet but I have visited many times. I remember driving through El Crucero and noticing the rusted roofs on the houses. My Nicaraguan wife told me that most of the gasses from Volcan Masaya blows over El Crucero and they have a problem with rain mixing with the sulfurous gas and corroding the tin roofs. Other than that it was significantly cooler than Managua, Ticuantepe, and Granada, the other places I saw that trip.

Nicaragua: disability social security:

I second ATZ's comment. Go to the source. If you don't have patience to search their web site, call. I've been searching their web site and found most everything I need. There are issues with staying outside the US for more than 30 days. SSA says this is residency not visit, but it doesn't affect eligibility for a check and Nicaragua is not on the 'banned' list (the banned list is very short).

Nicaragua: Medicare Opt-out:

First, I have not reached age 65 so I haven't signed up or opted out of anything. I assume you mean opt out of the doctor visit (part B) and prescription (part D) plans. If my research is correct it is more a matter of not signing up rather than opting out. The down side is that if you decide to sign up later it will cost you a penalty of 10 to 12 percent per year after you 65th birthday. If you maintain a mailing address in the States you can probably sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan with no monthly premium. I found several in Virginia. If you actually want to use your Medicare insurance you can plan a trip back to the States once or twice a year. If your plan is to 'cut all ties' then you can probably leave the States and never look back. Be careful, If Social Security can't reach you to prove your still alive they may cut off your benefits.

Nicaragua: Married to a Nicaraguan:

Anyone here married to a Nicaraguan and gained residency (or citizenship) as a spouse? I'm curious about the hoops to be jumped through.

Nicaragua: Crime spiking there yet?:

Laperro, I would suggest that this is the kind of information you are looking for: https://www.facebook.com/101survivalist/ You won't have a maid or cook but you probably won't make much of a mess in your mountain top bunker and you will be eating freeze dried food anyway.

Nicaragua: Sad Story:

From my limited Spanish, it appears to be a home invasion and robbery gone wrong. There is something about his girlfriend being arrested along with four others. Two were tracked from the recovered stolen truck by dogs. 63 year old man with a 23 year old girl friend is my take away. Bad idea, especially if he's loaded, but it does illustrate that Nicaragua isn't Shangri La.

Nicaragua: Aquarium Supplies:

Does anyone know if aquarium supplies, specifically saltwater aquarium supplies, are available anywhere in Nicaragua?

Nicaragua: Workers vacation days (double pay):

Very usefull information here: http://www.nicaragua-guide.com/employees-domestic-help.html Although it is specifically about domestic help, I believe it applies to all employees. Holidays appear to be defined, but 'vacation' is rather vague.

Nicaragua: Replacing your car:

When it's time to replace your car, would you buy a new car in Nicaragua, buy a used car in Nicaragua, buy a car outside Nicaragua and ship it to Nicaragua, or buy a car outside Nicaragua and drive it to Nicaragua? If I missed your choice feel free to add methods to the question (like I need to give you permission).
