Burma: moving with a young family to myanmar:

Hi there happy to provide advice. I've got several friends working there and have stayed there many times. First I guess I need to ask where will he be working? Yangon I assume? I'll assume it is and I will assume it is for one year at least. The biggest cost is finding a place as it is really overpriced compared to the rest of Asia and is close to Sydney prices where I live. Golden Valley is even more expensive than Sydney which is the embassy and rich Chinese and western suburb. If you are in Yangon I can give you some suggestions but prepare to be surprised! I'm not sure if you want an English language school? There are several fair enough schools but nothing like the quality and quantity in places like Bkk or Bali. Medical treatment is very poor and transport is frustrating. There are now a few good supermarket chains that sell westerner food including fresh milk. My biggest worry would be the children as they will invariable get something like Dengue unless you are painfully careful. The expat scene is very poor but depending in your nationalists there are some good groups. The Australia club is not so pretensions but getting someone to vouch for your membership is always a bit tricky. They have nice monthly evers. Anyhow let me know and questions and I'd be pleased to answer. I'll be back there in three weeks Cheers

Burma: Looking for a flat to rent (sharing or non-sharing) in Yangon:

Hi Roy did you manage to find a good place to stay? Rents are really high in Rangoon atthe moment!

Burma: Creating a frienship network, in Yangon:

Hey there. Yes work is very slow for esl teachers at the moment. It if you can get a job you can get about 1000 usd per month with he right qualifications and you need to be European. Not sure if the changes won't be reversed. That's what we all thought in 1990 when the election was coming!

Burma: considering a move:

Hey not sure if you are already in Burma. I guess you are considering Rangoon? first problem is there are no banks you can use so you need cash. No credit cards can be used. So yes it is easy to get in and out like and city but make sure you work out your money well so you don't run out. What to pack? Well like any low income country! Let me know if you a want any specific advice. If you get a job accommodation is generally included. Pay is very poor if you are teaching etc but if you don't hang out at foreigner places you can live well. James
