About Lindsay

I am an Australian academic and adventurer. I live and work all over the world in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, history and museum management. I have been living in Bolivia for the past fascinating ten years where there is much work to be done in my areas. I have recently transferred my base from La Paz in the Alti Plano to Rurrenebaque in the Amazon, in the region of Beni. Here I am working in Archaeology and Eco-tourism with the setting up of a new nature reservation. Publishing further books in my fields is one of my main focus right now. I also write novels, poetry and childrens books. My work involves quite a lot of expeditionary work as well, and so I spend a lot of time in the wilderness.

Advice for New Expats

Take time to settle in, look around and meet the local people and culture before making any big decisions. Always learn the language as fast as you can, even if its difficult. I have had to pick up quickly over a dozen languages and nobody has ever laughed at me for trying. Also get out of the cities and into the natural beauty of the countryside.

I would love to live in...

Bolivia

Venezuela: Stay in Bolivian amazon offer:

I am an Australian archaeologist offering room and board in Rurrenebaque, Beni region in the Bolivian amazon in exchange for some child minding/tutoring and house tidying. It is a wonderful place to live and this a great opportunity to get to know the Amazon and its people. It may also involve some travelling around in remote areas because of my work. If interested please contact me by email - minimum 1 month, age 18 - 35. I also have a room to rent by the week for anyone interested, its a great place to stop and relax on a long South American trip.

Bolivia: moving to Bolivia:

Its going to be much harder than you imagine. I think you should come and live in Bolivia for awhile, tour around, make some contacts before you buy anything. Bolivian society is remarkably different to anywhere else in the world and the toleration of foriegners is very low, political instability high. The geographical variety alone will make buying land to settle on a difficult decision. Also just because you bought the land doesn't mean touchy local community will let you keep it. So saying, its a tough but wonderful frontier country to live in, I came for 1 month ten years ago! So don't be put off either, give it a trial run, with zero expectations.

What real estate agencys! It would be a novel idea here. Just come and get something out of the newspaper, don't trust anything you see on the internet.

Bolivia: Samaipata land:

Well Adrian, for one thing your car will have to newer than 2002 or you wont get it into the country, or find anyone willing to transport it to Bolivia. Looking for a shipping company, you will have to find one that goes through Chile, through Iqueque probably - thats the easiest port as they are used to dealing with Bolivia. cheers Lindsay
