Advice for New Expats

Read my book!

Some Forum Posts:

Dominican Republic: Las Terrenas Safety:

I do not live there, live elsewhere in the DR, but yes it has become less safe. There have been several murders of expats over the last couple of years in common with some other areas. I would not say it is the most dangerous place in the DR,but is suffering similar levels of crime to other tourist areas.

Dominican Republic: Help with some questions:

1. To apply for residency you need to apply at the Dominican embassy in your home country. You then have a stamp in your passport which enables you to finish the paperwork when you arrive in the country. 2. You do not need residency to purchase a home, and you do not need to purchase a home to apply for residency. 3. No restrictions for travel. If you do not have residency you will enter on a tourist visa and when it expires you will have to pay a fine when you leave. 4. Weather the same throughout the country more or less, more earthquakes in the north, more hurricanes in the south. 5. Yes you can open a business when you are a resident.

Dominican Republic: tips on moving to the Dominican Republic:

A million tips depending on where you are moving to, buying or renting, beach or mountains. Suggest you read "What about your saucepans?" available on Amazon to understand more about the country. Main tip would be learn Spanish, be careful who you trust (ex pat or Dominican), bring vitamins with you (expensive here), keep well hydrated.

Dominican Republic: What is the Real Estate Business Like In DR:

I wouldn't really recommend it. There is no legislation regarding real estate so anyone can do it. Commission ranges from 5 - 10%. There are often problems with the titles of properties, and there are lo ts of dishonest people in the business too. There are large organisations such as Remax, but most are small companies. Best areas for you to check out are the North coast - Sosua, Cabarete and the fast expanding east coast - Punta Cana, Bavaro.

Dominican Republic: Bahia de las Aguilas:

that is the name of the most beautiful beach in the country. It is on the road from Barahona to Pedernales on the Haitian border. it is so beautiful as there are no houses there. I would not recommend it as a place to live near as is miles from anywhere. What are you looking for?

Dominican Republic: Mountain Lodge???:

There are beautiful mountain hotels but none near Higuey. The nicest one which is close is in Miches which is a lovely mountain drive. Featured here http://www.hotel-dominican-republic.net/hotel-347-la-loma-miches.html

Dominican Republic: Advice - thanx...:

There are 4 different power areas - ABCD. A is 24hour power and D is around 10 hours a day. Depending on where you live you will need an inverter with a bank of batteries to take over when the street power is off. The size of inverter and number of batteries will depend on how much wattage you consume. You can stay as long as you want without residency but will have to pay an overstay fine at the airport. It is getting harder to work without residency though.
