Argentina: Safe Barrios in Gran Buenos Aires:

Hi, Read your message and concern about security situation in the Northern Suburbs of Buenos Aires (specifically in San Isidro) and the need of advice. To be honest with you, the subject that you are bringing into consideration is not easy. It is true that things here (I would say everywhere in Bs Aires) has generated quite an issue regarding kidnapping, theft, uncertainty, violence, etc. So in order to offset all of these inconveniences you have to take certain precautions and obviously one of them is where and how to live and be prepared for all matters concerning security. Things have changed quite a lot in the country in these last 10 years mainly economic reasons after the devaluation we had over 2 years ago (a lot of poverty, beggars, jobless, etc). To answer your question and not make this reply long and boring to you, I think that you could find an interesting place to live around the areas you have described. The benefit of renting or buying a house is mostly benefitial (besides things here are now much cheaper in u$s terms after the devaluation we had), and we have excellent bilingual schools that provide top education. In so far as values of real estate and other matters, would need to know more specifics in order to give you better guidelines. As a reference, a nice closed in barrio (maybe your wife is aware of it), is called San Isidro Chico, good accomodations, private and with quite an amount of expats and foreigners living there for the same reasons you are asking. Rents here range between u$s 3000 and u$s 6000 a month. My suggestion, having children in appartments is complicated (lol), so I would go definitely in getting a house. If you need I can provide pictures and details of listings by mail. Well, I am open to answer any questions that you may have and make life easier for your future transfer over here. Don't hesitate in e-mailing me when you can (arice@arnet.com.ar). Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Andrew

Argentina: Health Insurance:

Hi, Regarding your brief message concerning local health insurance program (in Buenos Aires), I think there are ample possibilities of excellent coverage and most of all at very convenient prices (compared with USA medical coverage). We have several options to consider depending on your requirements and needs. To give you a vague idea of values for a married couple the cost should be around $ 800 and $1000 (that is argentine pesos), that would be the equivalent of u$s 300/400. My suggestion would be to determine precisely your needs and according to that check out some " obras sociales o prepagas", that would better fit all of the necessities. Would like to know or have more information about you and your plans, in order to help you out appropiately. Feel free to contact me to the following mail: arice@arnet.com.ar Good luck, Andrew

Argentina: Moving to Buenos Aires:

Hi Dee, Don't understand what happened, but I guess you haven't received any of my e-mails answering your questions regarding your future move to Buenos Aires in December 2004. The possibility of finding apartments or houses near downtown with a yard for pets is not that easy. Downtown is an area that has mainly apartments but no garden availability, besides owners are not too keen in renting property with pets. You might have better luck for this sort of accomodation in the so called Northern Suburbs of Buenos Aires (aprox 40 to 50 minute ride by train and bus depending where your husband would be working). In this area you may find small homes with a nice yard and maybe a pool, good access to train stations, 2/3 bedrooms, carport or garage, maids quarters, etc, that could be of interest. The price range obviously differs according to different features but in order to give you a guideline, I would think the cost should be around $ 3000 and $ 3500 (argentine pesos: the equivalent of u$s 1000 and u$s 1200 a month) for rent (in some cases it includes extra taxes of the property). At the same time, this area is where mainly expats live with their families and where most foreign schools are located (in principal The Lincoln School, a highly regarded American School ), so it would be a wonderful opportunity to interact with other English speaking people. Nevertheless, would consider it very appropiate to learn some Spanish in order to gain time. Regarding your possibilities of practicing as a dental hygienist, I cannot say much. There could be chances of jobs in this profession but the help of a sponsor or reference would be convenient. Hope this message reaches you and the information I've supplied is of your satisfaction. Whatever question or reference you might need, don't hesitate in letting me know. Best regards, Andrew S. Rice (arice@arnet.com.ar)

Argentina: electric appliances:

Tanguera, Received your message regarding transportation of personal effects to Buenos Aires. Would recommend that you bring all of these items with you and buy the corresponding transformersand adapters locally in order to fit your requirements. Remember that we have 220 volts and 50 hz cycle (don't know what you use in Mexico, guess 110?), so consider this factor very seriously. Regarding this listing you mentioned, most of these products may be found with exception of electric blankets (don't exist here at all!). In so far as including everything on a plane obviously it is going to be very complicated, if you are being transfered by a Company guess the best bet would be to consider shipping most of your goods, is that possible?. Now, if you are coming here for a short period and as a tourist well that is a total different setup. Please let me know more details in order to help you. My e - mail is arice@arnet.com.ar Regards, Andrew
