Uruguay: mosquitoes:
Living on the coast back in 2011 I was overcome with mosquitos. Never walk in the grass, you kick up clouds of them, pray for dragonflies to eat them. They like to hitch a ride on your back into your house. Shake your shirt and pants in back before going indoors and that will help a little. I finally moved elsewhere in Uruguay and rarely get mosquitos now, but more flies. 6 of 1 and 1/2 dozen of the other, it seems. It's always something.
Uruguay: Moving to Uruguay in the future:
I have a BROU account and had been transferring funds from the states to my account here. Like Morel says, you have to provide documentation to prove the funds are legal. Recently, BROU sent an announcement that any funds deposited to your BROU account from the states in excess of $350,000 UY will get hit with a hefty fee. I never got an announcement that was rescinded but maybe someone reading this will know and correct that. As far as B of A, you need to talk to them and see if they will transfer funds. I know Charles Schwab charges only $25.00 per transfer no matter how much you send. If your were born here, you can get an account at a different bank and avoid the BROU fees.
Uruguay: Immigration Attorney:
Contact these attorneys in Montevideo: http://www.fs.com.uy/
They will tell you exactly what is required for a second passport, one is being a citizen first. Good luck.
Uruguay: New Bussiness in Atlantida....:
Thanks for the link. I asked them where one can read the list of ingredients and will post that once they reply.
Uruguay: Jewish in Uruguay:
I know there was a bombing of a Jewish Center in Buenos Aires a year or so ago, but nothing here as far as I have heard. There are businesses in Montevideo owned and operated by Jews but very few. Everything and everyone in the states is being anti-ed except for white male evangelicals. They want to start with the gays and make it their Christian duty to discriminate against gays and make it legal. Their fundamentalist religion 'trumps' all other religions. Like Germany in the 1930s. Who is next? American Taliban in the states. I do not think you will see anything like it here.
Uruguay: Real estate offers:
You can always buy and install splits which are readily available.
Uruguay: Zika:
Hey Morell answers so many inquiries with legitimate answers that has helped so many. I, for one, like to see reports of incoming storms. etc. I don't believe in the Zika scare, but if it is in the news and M feels it should be shared, then take it or leave it.
Uruguay: Cheese starter cultures & supplies?:
I have searched every way I can with cultivos de queso, culturas de queso and cannot find anything. I contacted the cheese factory in Colonia but never heard back from them. So I am having some direct set cultures send to me from the states. I hope to turn them into mother cultures so I can always have them on hand. If you want aged cheeses, you should get a wine cooler to age them in. I know there are supplies here but since I brought my own, I cannot say where one would find the molds. Probably an agro store. Good luck and if you get a good lead, let me know please. I miss cheddar and jack.
Uruguay: lavadora:
Avoid Fridigaire Washing Machines. I bought new one from Motocyclio and it never worked even once. Returned it to Motociclio and they replaced it with one that would not spin. Then replaced it with someone else's returned unit and it did not wash clothes. So I suggest you avoid Frididaire and Motocyclio. They will not refund the money and indicate if it worked one time it was a good machine. I had a GE prior to that and it lasted 3 years. Cannot find one now. So I bought a James and it is a very good machine. Not had it long enough to say it works fine for years, but had good recommendations from other expats. So my money is on James and I really warn people about store policies at Motociclio. They get your money and they won't let go without a lawyer. I am still out my money and no washing machine from them. Not even a store credit. If you shop there, take a lawyer with you.
Uruguay: US to UY Moving Company Recommendation:
I agree with expat 91364 but maybe avoid Sterling International stateside. Once they get your money, they refuse to help you with anything. Others have used them without incident but I could not get them to help with damages/losses to the contents of my container.
