Brazil: Home Schooling in Brazil Legal or Not?:
I live not far from Curitiba, and I too am dissatisfied with the K-12 education available here. My wife and I are now homeschooling our kids (9 and 11 years). Check out Connections Academy, we also supplement their curriculum with the Kahn Academy courses among other material available online. And I couldn't care less about what the Brazilian government has to say. They've got bigger fish to fry than me. All things being equal, there is no reason to advertise the fact for that matter. Go to it!
Brazil: how to live in brasil without work visa:
Paul, there are absolutely opportunities for people without language skills. When I first arrived in 1999 (for the second time), I spoke bupkis in Portuguese. However, I ran into a guy who owned an English school and he had clients who wanted a native English teacher for his employees. I had know Carteria de Trabalho or CPF, but that didn't matter because I was a native English speaker. So I started teaching four hours a day, six days a week at R$35 an hour. That more than paid the bills with plenty left over for my daily chopp.
Today, I my clients include TIM, Electrolux, and Volvo. My rate is still R$35 an hour, but that is per student. So I earn plenty with six students two hours a day, four days a week. I also write print and web copy for clients marketing their products in English-speaking countries. You can too if you have the skill set. The best advice I can give is for you to make your own job and forget being a funcionario for feijao...
