Algeria: Moving/Marriage in Algeria:
Hi! I do not live in Algeria, but I did marry an Algerian. We met in USA, he returned to his country and then we did a K1 fiance visa, he came to USA and then we married here. Lots of paperwork, but it was easy. I am also an American Muslim, I became Muslim when I met my husband. I have been in Algeria for a few months - on the outskirts of Algiers in Draria. It was very, very different than the USA, but was amazing to be around all of the family and how close they are. Though I could go outside (by car) with my husband, I was not allowed to go outside the home and walk around the neighborhood or go to the corner market or things like that - would have to be careful not to show myself in a window, etc, etc. Very different for women there. I'm sure each family and neighborhood is different. I wish you the best of luck. Are you now living in Algeria?
Algeria: Any cycling group here:
Hi, I noticed that no one replied. When I was in Algiers, the area that I stayed in and the driving we did around the city seemed to me would make it very difficult to do any sort of cycling. Maybe more of an off-road mountain biking type (?). My husband said that there are locals (or we assume they are locals) that try to cycle and they do it on the highway as that is really the only good road. I would be very careful and definitely wear a helmet. I did not see any organized groups riding. You may just have to start riding and see if you see others (?) Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Algeria: Home Rent:
My husband is Algerian. Hydra is very expensive - don't know what your budget is and how long you are planning to stay. Feel free to reach out with your budget or whatever things you're looking for. There are other safe neighborhoods besides Hydra.
Algeria: Fun days out in Algiers:
It sounds good, depends on location and how it is maintained and kept. Would be good if Algiers had neighborhood cafes for women or outdoor playgrounds for children.
Algeria: Just Arrvied in Algeria:
Hello. My experience was very similar as to the above. I spent two months in Algiers, Draria area and there was absolutely nothing for entertainment for women outside the home. I could not even venture outside in the neighborhood for a walk - had to drive somewhere outside neighborhood as it would have shamed the family I presume. I did ride the bus to downtown with sisters and that was quite an adventure. We went walking around to shop and ate ice cream. The shopping experience was quite different. What I experienced was only male shop keepers, no females and I was very uncomfortable attempting to look at anything because they would just stare/leer at us. My family said they do that because they think that we are going to steal something, but it was very uncomfortable and I thought quite rude - but just culture shock and totally different as to what I am used to. I thought the most fun was a drive on the coast to Tipaza to view the ruins. I've always thought if I moved to Algiers I would start a women's only cafe, women's only gym and women's only shopping area at least with women shop keepers!
Good luck, best wishes. My recommendation is to immerse yourself in the family and try and learn the cooking and the language. I only knew English and Spanish and also kept confusing words in Spanish/Algerian. Next time I'll go I will learn to relax in the home a bit more and not be so intent on wanting to get out and explore.........
It's so hard to drive/get anywhere there!
Algeria: SItuation in Algers:
My husband is from Algeria. I have visited once for about two months. I mainly stayed in and around the neighborhood but did go downtown and up the coast. I tried to look like a local including wearing a head scarf. I dI'd not have any problems but I didn't live there and it wasn't apparent that I was from the USA. I ate all the local food but drank bottled water. I didn't get sick. Being peanut butter with you. My husband's family loved it.
Algeria: Shopping in Algiers? Visiting from USA:
Salam Alykoum. I am visiting my husband's family in Algiers. I am looking for ideas for authentic Algerian shopping experiences in or near Algiers. I would like to buy plus sized clothes typical Algerian style as well as Algerian crafts and Fabric to take back home to USA. I am looking for good prices not expensive. Any ideas would be helpful. Also is there a large grocery store or something similar to Target or Walmart? Shoukran.
Algeria: Importing to Algiers - Ideas for Products:
Hi all! I've recently married into an Algerian family and will be spending time in Algiers and USA. We have an import/export business and I'm trying to get new ideas for types of product that is greatly needed in Algiers. I'm thinking that my fellow expats that have already been living in Algiers may have some great ideas for us! Any and all ideas are welcome. Looking forward to making new (female) friends to share time with in Algiers when I come out!
