Malaysia: any cool high elevation expat friendly locations??:
Let me know how you make out with that. You might also add "Retirement Visa Requirements " to your list as I know that Malaysia has them just as Thailand does, and they are not meagre. Unfortunately I will not be able to meet the financial requirements of either. have you thought about Belize? Still cheap - tho certainly not the cheapest - and a short plane ride to the U.S. for medical, etc. AND they speak English. Just a thought. Good luck in your search and please keep me posted if you find the perfect needle in the perfect haystack.

Malaysia: retiree financial requirements:
I feel your pain Geoffrey. I was looking at Malaysia as well, but I only got as far as the Visa requirements and I had to put on the brakes. And sadly I don't think its going to get any easier. As more of us retire without sufficient income to survive in our native countries, more will be looking to more affordable locations. And I suspect the influx of foreigners without sufficient money will cause the requirements to get tighter, just as they have in most first world countries. So I am also now looking to places like Panama and Ecuador. I would be interested in your take on life in Ecuador and what motivated you to look elsewhere. Good luck and maybe I'll see you soon.

Malaysia: Citizenship in Malaysia:
Find the nearest Malaysian councillor office or consulate and ask them. Just Google Malaysian Consulates in the United States and you will find one. There will almost certainly be one on the west coast, probably L.A. or San Fran.
Philippines: reasons to "escape" to Philippines:
I gotta say... I think all you doom and gloom conspiracy addicts ore f'en NUTS! If you truly believe that the world is coming to an end, then you should "escape" to a country that can't even organize its own road system, that can't survive a disaster such as the recent storm without international aid, and where crime, corruption and even terrorism are rampant. Sounds like paradise to me.
Philippines: Bar Scam - Avoid La La Land in Manila:
Why the need for judgement and attitude? Where do you get off???
Saint Lucia: For anything SLU contact me.:
Just curious as to the cost of living in St. Lucia. I am a single guy with limited resources. I would be looking to rent something small (cottage?) preferably outside of town and fairly close to the water.
Thanks

Philippines: upside of Philippines:
Thank you. That was very helpful. You should contact the Philippine's Tourism Dept. and get a job as a copywriter.:>). One final question. I will not be buying property, I will be looking for a rental, ideally a cottage type residence, just for myself, possibly with room for a live-in house-keeper. I like the beach, small to medium sized towns with relatively easy access to the city, doctors, dentists, etc. I will be on a very limited budget - probably $1200 - $1500 U.S. / month. I would prefer a location that is not prone to devastating cyclones. Any suggestions as to places to look at?
Mucho thanx again!

Philippines: Filipina partner for serious relationship do's and don'ts.:
I currently live in Toronto. We have a large Philippine population here. Many are nannies and caregivers, They are simple, church-going women. Not my thing but they are good citizens and good people. On the other hand I have an old sports car - 1989 Toyota Supra. When I lived in Los Angeles, and now that I live in Toronto, the best mechanics I found in both cities were Pilipino. It was just a coincidence but these guys are smart about cars and I wouldn't let anyone else touch my car. I also had a Pilipino roommate in Los Angeles. She was a critical care nurse who worked at UCLA. Obviously smart - and VERY cute (she had a boyfriend :<(. My point is this - there are good and bad, smart and not-so-smart, beautiful and not-so-beautiful folks wherever you go. Undoubtedly people who live in third world countries and in remote place are not as worldly as some of us. That can be good or bad. Having said that, the more I read these conversations, the less interested I am in relocating to the Philippines. I need a cheap place to retire but I am reading about soooo many negatives.... Is it really that bad? What are the upsides if any?
Philippines: Meeting a Filipina:
Amen brother.
Philippines: New Lease On Life:
Let this be a warning to all you dough-eyes guys that think that women are different in the third world. The only difference is things are more desperate and you have a target on your back, Don't think for a minute that a 20-something who wouldn't give you the time of day at home is going to love your saggy ass overseas. If you are dumb enough to be separated from your money so easily, then you deserve to live with the consequences. Sorry to sound heartless, but you know what they say about a fool and his money....
