Panama: 20 years' tax free on properties:
I had a buddy of mine a week back send me a copy of an e-mail he'd gotten regarding the 20 years with no property taxes in Panama. In it, if I understood it correctly, it stated that property taxes weren't actually "free" during those 20 years, but rather "deferred", unless the property was worth $30,000 or less. Can anyone expound / explain? I know there's tons of shtuff out there on the internet right now, so I was just looking for whether there was any truth in this or not.
Panama: Homebuilding Experiences...:
Rather than post the ever-present "how much does it cost", I've wondered if any here either worked with a builder or built their own home there in Panama. Just wondering what your' experiences were like for those that have. Were there things that made you scratch your head? (or pull out your hair?). Did you find it to be less expensive than here? Were any items just crazy-difficult to come by, and what particular perks did you add to "make it your own?"
Panama: This might sound crazy, but...:
Has anyone considered renting a Ryder truck (or heck, buying a used one for that matter) and just driving direct? I know that for many this might be unfeasible, but I live in Houston, not too far from the border as things go... why not buy a used Ryder truck outright, ship one's stuff, and then drive back and sell it? What kinds of issues might a person run into in doing this? I'm just kind of thinking out loud, and don't know if this has been attempted before
Panama: Panama vs. Nicaragua:
Lordy ~ I'd think the pool would be in lieu of the A/C! I found this out the hard way here in Houston Tx, where it regularly hits 100 degrees. We were able to postpone turning on the A/C by several weeks (even with higher heat than we were used to coming from Atlanta) by simply diving in after dinner... sorry, I've become something of a "pool nut" since moving to a hotter climate ~ it's recreation, it's relaxation, it's exercise, in the evenings it's free air conditioning... really, it's a way of life. I'd rather have a small house and a big pool than vice versa, lol!
Panama: Cost of Living In Panama - Cheaper than CR?:
Currently I'm trying to compare and contrast Panama and CR, and I've gotten some very good advice about CR on that forum. However, as I've dug, I've also found that Panama has risen on people's lists in recent years. The reasons given are typically "better roads, more cosmopolitan, more friendly towards expats, and finally ~ less expensive". But in what ways is it less expensive? What does electricity run per Kilowatt hour in Panama? What are some surprising things that people find to be less? Or far less? It seems like housing itself is roughly on par with CR, so what are some of the hidden perks? Thanks all =)
