Portugal: Budget for Living in Lisbon or Cascais:

My husband and I just moved to Portugal from the US. Your budget sounds pretty wonderful and should provide for a comfortable stay here. Even in Cascais. The only advice I would give is.....rent for a while before you buy. Good luck. Lots of wonderful folks here to help when you have more questions.

Portugal: Getting Dollars to Portugal:

Hi Craig, Paul and I just transferred money here from the US. We opened a USD account here which is tied to our EURO account....and although we can't avoid the TT fees we do control how much we want to exchange to EUROS and/or simply withdraw dollars and get it exchanged else where. Last week the conversion rate was 1.3 at Caixa Geral Depositos. It hurts and we haven't been able to do better outside of the bank.

Portugal: Moving to Portugal:

My husband is from the UK and I'm a Portuguese citizen moving to Portugal in April. We will inquire about the immigration process as soon as we get there. It may be a little diff being he's married to a Portuguese citizen but will share anything I find out. Not sure how soon you need the info.

Portugal: Moving company from Los Angeles to Lisbon:

Hello everyone, our move to Cascais is fast approaching in April. I searched prior messages for some tips on moving companies. Just wondering if any of you can share your experience. We have gone from wanting to ship everything to shipping a few boxes and re-purchase what we need once there. We recently paid USD$7K to ship a 20' container from Ireland to Los Angeles. After it arrived in Los Angeles we were told it didn't pass the x-ray and customs would have to order a physical search of our boxes. They charged us an extra USD $1.5K, delayed delivery three weeks and to date we don't know exactly why this was necessary. We will only ship what we absolutely have to. Hoping to keep cost around USD $1.5K ? Thank you for all your help, Terry and Paul

Portugal: Any money making opportunities for ex citizens returning?:

I'm a 48 year old female born in Cascais who's family left Portugal for the US after "25 de Abril". I was a child. I have visited Portugal once every couple of years since the 1990's and feel like im home when i do. Now that my nest is empty; my husband an I will be going next Spring to look for an apartment to buy. We would love to live there a significant part of the year but all I hear is how much everyone is hurting economically .....how there are no opportunities for employment. I speak Portuguese and would love to start a business there but haven't had any great ideas come to mind in light of the economic climate. Any ideas would be so much appreciated.

Italy: American family moving to Italy to be with her true family:

Bianca, I say do it...follow your heart. It sounds like you're good at making things happen. You will learn the language in time and find a school for your son. You have a huge plus ! A family that can help you, guide you. What is the worse that can happen? You come back to the US. I left my career to move to Ireland to be with my boyfriend (now husband) ...stayed a year and realized it wasn't for me because the weather. I'm from LA so, you can understand. Im back in LA with the dogs, including one more we adopted in Ireland. Now we are planning a trip in the Spring to Southern Italy. Plan to buy a small place and spend some time every year. I'm originally from Portugal where I have family and plan to buy a small place there too. We plan to be mobile and enjoy all the places that makes us happy. As for work? I'm sure we'll find something along the way. We are debt free and ok with living a very simple life. Your husband being in the computer field gives him a huge advantage. Maybe he can consult for various companies and will help to learn the language. You will never have all the answers to your questions nor have every step lined up. If you wait for this to happen you will never go. I wish you the best and follow your heart. Terry

Italy: Jobs in the south of Italy?:

Last year I quit my 6 figure high tech job in California's Silicone Valley to be with my boyfriend in northern Ireland. Fast forward a year and we are now married living in LA where I was living previously. The thought of going back to a demanding 12 hour day job makes me depressed. Both my husband and I are debt free which took years to achieve. We have some money saved up that can support us for a couple of years in LA. We both long to spend time in Europe where we can retire. I'm 48 and Paul is 52.....the reality is we need to work and want to work but in a place we both dream of retiring in.....South of Italy and want to have a life after work. I love the ocean and Paul's hobby is photography. Any ideas on places we should visit in the south and how to research the job market? Thank you for your support.
