Some Forum Posts:

Ecuador: Best sites and reading for research before moving?:

I don't know about others reasons for following this, and other, forums, but I want and need all of the input I can gather to put together with my personal experience (read: visits to Ecuador) to develop the entire experience and allow me to make certain decisions. Like the parable of the blind men and the elephant, perspective is the rule and experience and the ability to evaluate input provides perspective. Pettiness and personal attacks provide me insight to individual personalities and add (or subtract) weight. I appreciate it all.

Chile: Living Expenses:

bronco Can you give some examples of rents in, and near Santiago versus some outlying area? I understand the cost of living in Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit and Houston, but it differs greatly from Elgin IL, Tracy CA, Saginaw MI, and Missouri City TX. All close to the big cities and much less expensive. I have no idea what costs are like NEAR the larger cities of SA. Trying to get an idea. Thanks.

Argentina: Which country is best?:

I am not an expert. However, I spent a couple of months in Argentina (Mendoza) many years ago. I am now approaching retirement and intend to travel to Argentina, Ecuador and Peru with an eye toward settling. If I had to make a choice right now based on affordability, I would choose Ecuador. Based on everything else: Argentina. I would never consider moving to any country without investigating thoroughly and visiting each option.

Ecuador: Commission on Americans Living Abroad Act:

This site is more fun than I've had in years! I can barely control my bladder until I read daily postings. Although I am a registered Republican, I don't agree with about half of what they preach and far less of what Democrats say and do. I see the creeping advance of socialism in the US and I believe it is bad for this country. I understand, from reading, that Ecuador, like a great number of countries in the world, has socialist tendencies and policies, and may be a "socialist country" now, or in the near future. However, I hope never to be so arrogant as to presume to KNOW what policies are best for a country and a people I really know so little about. I DO believe in the God-given right of a nation to self-determine their form of government. I absolutely believe THAT is the American way. I believe we have moral right if we disagree with our government to a. Work for change, b. tolerate the existing policies, Or c. Get out.. Option d. Is whining and not cool.

Argentina: Why not Argentina?:

My wife and I will retire in late 2014 and intend to travel, and consider residing in South America. Based on all I've read and heard, the most economical place to retire is Ecuador. I am a little leery of the political stability of that country. I visited Mendoza AR many years ago for a couple of months and have nothing but positive memories. I recognize much has transpired, politically and economically over the years, in both AR and the US, but I really want to look hard at AR as retirement approaches. I intend to avoid BA, would consider Mendoza or a similar sized metro area, but would prefer something a little more rural, either a small community or the fringes of a larger town or city. Very concerned with the availability of internet and/or English language TV. Have some Spanish, but we're both studying to improve. Does anyone have any ideas?

Ecuador: Rural Living in Ecuador:

My wife and I are going to look carefully at living in Ecuador when we retire (late 2014). We want moderate climate (50's to 70's F) and prefer a more rural, less congested area, however, internet and cable or satellite TV are necessary. We've been looking at Cuenca, Loja, Vilcabamba, and Catamayo as likely starting points for our adventure. Does anyone have any thoughts on those areas, or any others? I guess ideally, we would want a small house on enough property to keep a garden and a few chickens.
