Uruguay: expat meetings in Montevideo:

FINALLY after 3 years of reading and research we arrive in Montevideo May 14th for 3 months :-) I have compiled some info on expat meetings over time, but I think some groups may no longer meet. For example the Montevideo Language Exchange at Costa Azul Cafe I could not find on Facebook as referenced for meeting information. If you could please let us know of the expat meetings that you attend and enjoy we would be very grateful. And we look forward to meeting you! Christine and Brian

Uruguay: Airport transportation:

We will be coming to Montevideo in 2 weeks. I read taxis are expensive to get into the city from the airport. The two of us will each have a suitcase and carry on. I have seen mentioned a shuttle? Can anyone tell me more about there - how to get the shuttle, of any other advice to get from airport into the city. Thank you in advance and hope to see soeme of you!

Uruguay: mortgages:

I know most people pay cash for property in Uruguay, but as a general question is it possible to get a mortgage to buy a house, using the house as collateral until our house in he U.S. sells? If this is possible what would a bank require as a down payment? And what banks might do a residential mortgage?

Uruguay: Visa run to BA:

I thought it was 90 days for the tourists visa. Is it 180 days?

Uruguay: Diatomaceaous Earth:

I did a lot of research on DE. Even bought a bag when I lived in US (FL) My animals had fleas and I did not want to use chemical. DE did NOTHING for the fleas. Dawn dishwashing detergent helped. Not saying that would help your ant problem. Is there any kind of agricultural extension service for farmers or an agricultural university? I have subscribed to Mother earth News for many years - I know the 'bugs' are different in UY but you can buy a DVD from Mother that contains all the article ever written - might be useful in your gardening.

Uruguay: Texan moving to Uruguay!:

Don't even consider driving even if there was a road at the border between Colombia and Panama. There is no road deep in the jungle of the Darien. It has been done by jeep in the past. Because of the drug trade it would be a deathwish to even try it. I spend time in Panama volunteering with a non-profit animal spay neuter group and have traveled extensively even to the Darien but not too deep into the jungle. There are those who drive from TX to to Panama, but the road fro 4 wheels stops at the jungle. 5 years ago I was like you when I bought in Panama but I learned I could buy anything I needed here. You can bring personal things you 'have' to have on flights with you over the years. Everywhere changes and Panama has under Martinelli. I have been studying Uruguay for 3 years and it has much of what I am looking for. coming next month to explore!

Panama: looking for good insurance agent in Panama City:

I am looking for a good insurance agent in Panama City to talk with about a global insurance plan. Please do not refer K-B to me. Not a good experience with that office a couple years ago - after filling out many papers, pre-paying a year and supplying many documents asked for -NO reply after 3 or 4 months and very poor customer service from them. Just need a good insurance person - who knows how to provide GOOD customer service if that exists in Panama. Would also like to switch my apartment insurance and have all with one company. Thanks!

Panama: business opportunities:

Open a GOOD pizza place. In Panama city please -Paitilla. Panamanians have NO idea what good pizza is! I went out on Mothers Day (last weekend to an 'Italian' place and it was packed. Everyone had pizza on their table. Mine came and was sitting in 1/2 inch of grease. After sopping up the grease with napkins I tried a slice - yuck! And the grease continued to pour out. I am afraid most Panamanians sadly have no idea of what good quality food is - they will eat anything and not know the difference. Only the expats and those with better taste will appreciate GOOD food!

Panama: Contractor in Panama City:

We have a serious floor tile problem and the exterior glass wall is going to have to be removed to do correct the floor tile problem (over 75% of our floor tile will have to be re-laid) We need to find a very good, knowledgable, honest contractor who will do a good job. This is a nightmare. Our apartment is uninhabitable. THANK YOU in advance for any info.
