Colombia: Retireing/Taxes!:

Hola, I retired last year from the US Foreign Service and came here to live in Colombia. I heard about the tax situation so have been consulting with lawyers, and of course everyone you talk to tells you something different! My impression is that there are easily ways to legally not pay a lot of taxes here. I would appreciate people posting whatever they find out. For example, one way to not declare much in property overseas is to put everything into a trust. Best, Jeannie

Colombia: buying a used car in bogota:

Well, if your budget is 20M it doesn't seem to make much sense to suggest you buy a new Toyota which is probably 60M or 70M. I bought a used Renault4 for 2.5M and with a lit more for fix up I have a car that will never die! I'm also looking for a 4X4 (for Villa de Leyva) and there are older cars for sale for that price, and even for 10M. You just need to be careful as with any deal. Get someone to help you! Good luck!

Colombia: Best place for young semi retired single:

Welcome to Colombia! I have a similar profile as you--I retired here last year and am very happy! I hate the heat so ended up in Bogota, which is a great city, however the traffic and congestion can get to you, so I discovered a fabulous option, Villa de Leyva, which is about 3 hours from Bogota, perfect weather, beautiful colonial town in the mountains with many retired people, Colombian and expats, plus a community of professionals from Bogota who have houses there for the weekend. I am building a house (very reasonable) and will maintain a small apartment in Bogota in order to have the best of both worlds. I think it's a great option! Happy to meet you if you do come. Best, Jeannie

Colombia: Brokerage/investment companies in Colombia:

One of the long threads about transferring money in or out of Colombia mentioned that it's better to use a brokerage/investment company than a bank. Can someone tell us the names of the best companies to use? Thanks! Jeannie

Colombia: a bank account in Colombia:

Is there any bank that will let you open an account without a cedula? I just arrived but on a tourist visa because I couldn't get the pensionada visa in time, but I need the bank account soon. Any ideas? And, if anyone is is Bogota and would like to get together with a newbie to help explain the ropes, that would be most welcome! Best, Jeannie
