Ecuador: Living on $1100 a month:
I don't think the FDIC counts here anymore either as a new law was passed recently that gives the "government" the power to convert any dollars in a bank account to (I think the term was) certificates which the government then has the ability to name what the certificate is worth. I'll get more specifics from the person that I was discussing this with as I can't remember the exact terms used right at the moment. Specifics like the name of the law it was hidden in and the term they used if it wasn't certificates etc. Regardless it makes me feel about as safe with my money in a US account as it does in an Ecuadorian bank. Is there any financial institution that will guarantee that they will give you back exactly what you gave them, minus a reasonable fee for services?
Ecuador: Kale in Ecuador ?:
If you are looking for Swiss Chard which is a form of Kale or part of the Kale family the correct word is "acelga". If you are looking for curley Kale it is called "col rizada" and sometimes "col". If it is non-curley kale I.m not sure what it is called. Since each Spanish language type words are sometimes different such as Mexican Spanish, Spain/Castillian Spanish and Latin American Spanish, the same word may not be used in Ecuador. There is a West Indian Kale grown in South America called Malanga also but not sure if this is in addition to the other types of Kale or not.
If you want to know the word used in Ecuador for the "type" of Kale you are looking for you might ask Shelly who does organic farming in Ibarra and his wife is Ecuadorian. He is part of this group and is known as Scaref. They might be able to give you more insight on what types of kale can be found.
Or my favorite way of learning about the one I see is to find it in the store/mercado and ask one of the local people by saying "Como se dice" (How do you say) or "Que es la parabla por" (What is the word for) and point at it. Sometimes I preface it with "Mi espanol is no muy bien pero". This gives the person you are speaking to a "heads-up" that an extensive conversation will be difficult but you are willing to try. After they give me the word they use for that item I go look up the definitions for that word to see what the specific item is.
Ecuador: Any Catholics?:
At least one - I am. Lived in Spain for 4 years and as soon as I can get the house sold here I am headed to Ecuador. We were military in Spain but the base only had one mass which was too early for my body so I went to the churches in the neighboring small villages and sometimes downtown Madrid. To me it was not much different than going to mass as a kid as the masses were all in Latin or now to one of our local Polish Churches here in our area where both the mass and homily (lecture to some people after the gospel) are in polish. There should be some parishes in your area that have Spanish Masses. Call the local diocese office and see if they can tell you where there is one in your area - then go and see what it's like. Most likely the ones here in the states are in Spanish with a Mexican dialect. In Spain it was in Castillian Spanish. Sometimes the songs are the Spanish version of ones we know in English but most of the time in Spain they had their own music, Since most of the mass has pretty standard parts/prayers you can pick up your Spanish a little. Sometimes the local Diocese there put out a mass book with Spanish on one side and English on the other. I found that when I was in Italy and Germany.

Ecuador: Gay - Retiring to Ecuador:
When I went to live in Spain and Germany while in the military we were given books on the customs and rules and regulations of the country supplemented by the family history of them. We were told that we were in someone else's country and needed to respect their ways that were not ours and constantly remind ourselves that we were guests. One CO said they have lived this way for many years before the US came here and even if they changed their laws change does not happen overnight, ***************************** In this case you are not only entrenched in years of tradition of the country but the main religion of the country is Roman Catholic which does not condem the person just their sexual practices. If you are gay you are usually accepted but if you practice your sexual preferences it is considered wrong just like a person getting a divorce without an annulment through the church, If known they are shunned. A law is not going to change that especially in only a year or 2. If you understand the history you might be able to understand the actions or reactions in order to live without problems.
Even today in the US if you are a white person and move into an all black area so you think you will be welcomed with open arms? Law or no law? By the way I am one of those Catholics that was divorced. After my first husband died I was accepted again but the whole time I was raising my children it was a struggle so I know.
Ecuador: Moderation of ths site:
Unfortunately it also makes the searches for answers USELESS as there is so much garbage to wade through to get the good information on the thread that a person gets frustrated and asks the question again in hopes all the garbage won't show up again.
It's bad enough when the person answering talks about a deiiferent subject like the question on LIFE insurance was answered with replies for medical insurance but when it doesn't pertain to the subject at all and off it goes on the side road down the mountain instead of up it really is so frustrating that I try to find other places to get my answers but still haven't found one that either has the same pproblems or it's a "self-serving" site that ultimately wants you to pay for the owner's interpretation of the correct answers so I keep coming back hoping this time it will be different here.
Add to this when I look at the profiles of the "hijackers" many times their profile says they live in the US or Californnia etc and they say in their posts they are living in Ecuador! How can I put any credance in their advice or information and then I wonder if they have something to hide. It would be really nice if they did put in their profiles where they can be found or avoided based on the feelings of the person wanting to know.
Thanks I684007 for providing a proper place to express my comments. I didn't want to hijack someone elses' thread.
Ecuador: ECUADOR CENTRAL.COM:
Anyone know about this group: ECUADOR CENTRAL.COM ?
Somehow they got my email address. Looks to me like US prices for property in Ecuador - not impressed. My 8.5 acre farm in Indiana is 200,000 by the way it's up for sale.
Ecuador: looking for small town living:
I have seen pictures of small farms in a hillside with a view of the ocean. Where would those be? Also if it's only 2 or 3 hecacres in order to keep the price under 50,000 as the new US laws I just read about require reporting any property 50,000 or more now.
Ecuador: taking dogs & cat INTO USA:
What airline are you coming back on? What is your final flight destination - where you will take them out of the airport and into a car?
Ecuador: Where are the Expat Farming In Ecuador?:
At the suggestion of Susan I am asking that if any of you are expats or future expats that are or want to do "farming" in Ecuador to join this thread whether your farming is animals, crops or vegetables; organic or not, so we can see if there are enough of us to have our own group. If you could introduce yourself, if and where in Ecuador you are located, if you are already farming in Ecuador, why you chose the area you are farming in and what challenges you may be experiencing in achieving your farming goals to start. If you are looking to come to Ecuador to farm you might give us some of your background and what you think you might want to do as far as farming goes when you move there.
I guess I should start. At the end of this year I am planning on making my move to Ecuador and will be visiting the end of April to try and find where I want to live. I am currently working with my 82 year old neighbor who is like a father to me doing organic farming on about 6 acres of land in fruits, herbs and vegetables and helping with his egg production from 400 hens. We do 2 on-line farmers markets where orders are placed over a 4 day period and delivered on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The customers can come out to Pa's place anyday or buy "extras" that Pa brings with him on order delivery day. I know I want to do "farming" when I settle there but just not sure to what degree as Pa will only be visiting me during the Northern Indiana winters. My husband is afraid of the language barrier (in his mind) so he will be coming with Pa staying for 6 months only and I will be the one living in Ecuador full time. I feel that after a couple of years doing this Tome will find he likes it there and come to stay.
Staying in a foreign country alone isn't new to me as I was in Spain for four years and traveled to the 1972 Olymipcs in Munich, Germany from outside Madrid, Spain in a car with my teenage sister that was living with me at the time. We went from Madrid, through France, Switzerland and at the end of the Olympics back to Spain - In fact we left only hours before the shooting happened at the Olympic Village. Maps, dictionaries and some translations books in spanish, french swiss and german got us through the trip including a car breakdown in a French countryside. That was an experience! I learned to drive around Madrid by using maps and getting lost. Everytime you get lost you run across some place you had been before eventually or find the cross street locations on a map and then you find your way to where you were going. Staying safe and being careful are called for when living anywhere. I will be bringing my canine protector with me - No not just my Chihuahuas but I raised and trained shephard show and guard dogs before I took up showing Chihuahuas..
My goal is trying to find a good place to continue doing the same kind of farming I am now. By finding those that are expats in Ecuador that are farming and hearing about where they are and what they are doing, finding a place to live for me and many more like me that may be looking to come too will be more productive and maybe we can reciprocate by helping the farming expats that are in the group.. Depending on crops, animals, etc location for each person wanting to farm when they get here may differ so everyone's experiences will be invaluable to help us decide where we locate. Also maybe if you are doing the farming we are interested in, locating near you might be helpful to you and those of us that are looking.
If anyone reading this knows others that could be part of the group but are not on this Blog or doesn't post here, getting them to do so or posting for them would be so great.
Looking forward to conversing with all of you and meeting you when I visit in 2 months.
