Italy: 10-month stay in Italy?:

I want to stay in Italy for a 10-month period from Sept. 03 through June 04. The problem is, what kind of visa can I get? If I go on a tourist basis, I can only stay 3 months with perhaps another 3-month extension. I've been looking into the 'elective residence" visa, but that seems aimed at wealthy retirees. I have enough money to do this 10-month gig without working, but I'm certainly not wealthy nor ready to retire! Do I have any options? I'll be living in a small town, so don't think I can get away with just being invisible on the bureacratic radar. Anyone here successful at getting a residence visa, or otherwsie extendign their stay past 3-6 months? THANKS!

Italy: Relocating to Rome w/young daughter:

I am a single parent/writer relocating to Rome in Sept. 03 w/my 9 y/o daughter. I am getting an elective residence visa, as I plan not to work. I will not enroll my daughter in school but will do home-schooling. I have contracted with a relo agency to find housing, preferably 15-20 mins to center by metro. I'm looking for advice on establishing relationships for my daughter, since she will not have the usual school environment in which to make friends. I also want to know about organizations to join, and other things we can do once there to establish a social life and avoid isolation. Any tips from current expats living in Rome? Thx!
