Austria: Moving back to Austria -Need your advise:
Hi,
Married to an Austrian, and we lived in the US for 11 years and moved to Wien in 2010.
Don't bring your stuff. Waste of money. DO bring/buy shoes, especially boots and warm weather gear in the US; that type of stuff, shoes and clothes, are $$$$ here.
Rent in Wien is expensive, and most of the rentals have a "agent" you must use...and they charge 1200-2000 euros. Look for agent free properties, or try to rent from an expat.
Your 20 year old sone will havesome problems meeting friends. The Austrians are on a different frequency, so that is how it goes. Pretty tribal here. I am almost 50, and in 2 years, have not made one Austrian friend. Thankfully, there is a robust expat scene here, so that works for me.
Learn German asap, if you can. I have a little German now, and it helps, but I don't need it for work, and I don't think I'll ever be fluent. I have enough to eat out and shop!
Get all your paperwork sorted out before you leave. The paperwork is endless and absurd. Get used to it!
Good luck,
Kris
