Norway: Norwegian Translate:

You could try going to the NAV office locally and see if they will explain the letters to you in English. For most forms/applications NAV has en English version, so they might even re-issue the letters in English if you ask.

Norway: Currency Exchange:

We don´t do currency exchange here in Norway directly. We have found it to be cheapest to simply draw out money on our ATM card from our US credit union. You get a better exchange rate that way, and only the 1% cross-border charge that Visa adds on. Our credit union does not charge any ATM fees and the ATMs here don´t either. You would have to check with your bank to see if they charge a fee. If you are going to exchange a large amount (like $10,000.00, then you can have t the money wired to your Norwegian bank account.

Norway: Americans:

We are from West Virginia. We don´t miss America right now because we are here, but we do miss family, friends and cheaper prices when we are in Norway. We live in Kristiansand. We love Norway though, and have lived there 5 1/2 years. We will return in July.

Norway: Cell Phone Costs in Norway:

We live in Norway and only use about $20 per month on cell phones, using a pre-paid Telenor phone. Not a smart phone. We make most of our calls via the computer using Skype with their unlimited worldwide plan that only costs around $130.00 per year. We can call almost any landline in the world and most cell phones outside of Scandinavia free under the plan, including video calls to family computer to computer. Also, concerning phones, if you have an unlocked phone, it should work here if you just buy a sim card and subscribe to a plan or go with the pre-paid route. Dwight

Norway: Start-Up costs moving to Norway:

Before you consider bringing a car, you must check out the toll.no website to see how much enviromental tax you will pay. It is usually more than the cost of a new car in the US. We thought about bringing a Dodge Ram 2500 diesel pickup, and the total tax was around $65,000.00. We did not bring it, obviously. Used household goods have no import tax. Also if you want to be very frugal with furniture, you can usually find some nice things for give away or for a cheap price on www.finn.no, where you can also see houses for rent.
