Portugal: Dual citizenship USA-Portugal:
I did it but through my mother;
it is easier if you obtain Portuguese citizenship through a citizen parent than grandparent, with grandparents you have to demonstrate you can speak language (or so I was advised by embassy) - citizenship is automatic through parent - but your mother must be the child of your Portuguese grand parents - citizenship flows through the mother, or so I was told at SF embassy;
if you mother is alive she can apply for citizenship based on here parents (your grandparents) - just need to submit evidence that parents are Portuguese citizens, their marriage certificate and your mother's birth certificate and her marriage certificate (to account for presumed change in name) and pay a small fee - I did the whole thing for my mom, she didn't have to do anything,
after your mom has her citizenship you do the same thing for you - but now all you need is your birth certificate
I recommend personally making contact with embassy - my application was sitting there in the que until I personally went up and met and made a personal contact -
as far as worthwhile, I can't say yet, I am 18 months behind moving, and another 6 to 9 months to go before I move; you do obtain medical benefits but I am told it is still a good idea to obtain private insurance, and I am anticipating banking will be easier; also if you want to stay an extended period you do don't have to deal with the visa issue - and you can see the Portuguese discussion section for all the stories of the efforts and different information people were given, also you will have EU travel and other rights, you can also obtain a Portuguese passport which I was able to easily do through the embassy -
Portugal: Portuguese Identity Card and Passport:
If you have a Portuguese Birth Certificate you should be able to go to Consulate and obtain a Passport and your Id Card; that is what I did and I had the additional complication of first having to get my citizenship thru my mother;
Consulate may have to check first with Lisbon office on validity of birth certificate; I think the passport and id process only took one visit but it may have been 2, and I think it was less than $200.00
you can have a US and Portuguese citizenship - that is what I have - since you have Portuguese citizenship you can ago and stay as long as you want but there may be some issue of be subject to Portuguese income taxes if you stay more then 6 months, but it is complicated and there seems to be a difference of opinion
Portugal: Recommened car to own:
If one were going to own a car for use in Portugal and travel to other countries any recommendations? availability of service would be helpful - so something popular - Thanks
Portugal: Scouting trip to Portugal...help please?:
Hi, I saw the reference to being of Portuguese descent, you may be eligible for citizenship through your parents or even grandparents;
it took me about 6 months or so but working through the Portuguese Consulate in San Francisco, I obtained mine through grandparents who were born in Azores and my mom who was born in USA (but we registered her birth in Portugal this year so she is now a citizen) - I now have a citizen card which included medical number and eligibility for public health care, and a Portuguese passport so I don't need to worry about temporary residency, etc. plus you have right of residency if the other EU countries;
I am winding down to retirement or a break and Portugal is the planned 1st stop or home base and I thought the citizenship would be helpful, you might consider if it would be worthwhile for you, I can give you a head start on what you will need
Portugal: Budget for Living in Lisbon or Cascais:
My wife and I live in Calif. (US Born) we are researching overseas retirement, Portugal is on our short list in part because my grandparents were born in Azores and I may have a chance for citizenship - our concern is budget - is 3,200 to 3,800 Euros a month a reasonable budget for prop taxes, utilities, groceries, private medical, gym, a few dinners and lunches/coffees a week, language lessosn, and the basic grooming and day to day personal items for living in Lisbon or Cascais, bascially all livign expenses except travel? Also is under 400,000 Euros doable for a 2 bedroom condo in a neighborhood you can walk to services? Thanks for any help
