Uruguay: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving:
Now is Battle of Sarandi! in my old days was Dia de la Raza (Race Day) or Descubrimiento de America (Discovery of America), and at school we celebrated that Colon (Columbus) came to America to save us from the Indians, yes, I'm ironic, and I'm very glad with the changes, Battle of Sarandi was a battle for the independence.
In Uy with no have traditional meals associated with patriotic holidays, but my grandmother always cooked empanadas de carne and pastelles de dulce de membrillo on holidays because the family was at home.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Uruguay: Funeral arrangements:
that´s true Morell, and because the "salon funebre" and all the stuff are really expensive, you can pay every month with your Mutualista;´s bill or directly at the "empresa funebre",
Like this, when people die, all the expenses are really paid.
Like Morell said to pay "emergencia movil" it´s really important and not expensive, I´d say the same for "empresa funebre".
Have a nice day,
Rosana

OK so no payments can come from US checking or savings accounts to businesses in Uruguay? I know I will need a vehicle soon after arriving and thought it would be fastest if the money came straight from my US bank but now it sounds like I will have to quickly set up a BROU account if I can but not sure how fast that can happen. Can someone please update me on what paperwork is currently needed to open an account and how long the whole process takes? When I go back to look at old threads about this there is some conflicting info so not sure if things have changed and now it is harder to open an account. If the process takes long I wonder if a wire transfer would work? Letsmove - thank you for the info on dealer installed options.

Uruguay: Help finding a place to rent:
Barrio Marconi is not Ciudad Vieja. Barrio Marconi is Aparicio Saravia St. and San Martin Av. always knew like `Barrio Borro``
I don´t recommend you Ciudad Vieja, altough I know there´s a lot "reciclajes" (old houses transformed in apartments) in the area.
Like Carlitos, I suggest you Parque Batlle, Pocitos (I don´t like Pocitos but I think there are more options to rent) but I really love Prado and around (Barrio Atahualpa, Brazo Oriental, but not La Teja, Cerro)
The first thing is to look is the safety of the apartment, so the best kind are the moderns buildings like this :
http://www.gallito.com.uy/apartamento-1-dormitorio-en-alquiler-en-prado-inmuebles-9873966
Or if it's like a "house" with bars everywhere. There's a lot of burglaries in Montevideo, and you don't have to neglect.
Good luck

Uruguay: questions about renting:
Many years ago, Banco Hipotecario del Uruguay, was the only option for the deposit of 6 months " de garantia". It is regulated by the State, and you don't worry, for sure you have your money after the end of the contract.
Now, I know the laws has changed (a lot), and there are other options for that.
