Mexico: WARNING -Gas Station fraud!:
This type of problems happen in every country. That has happened to me in France and Italy too. Locals can see somebody is foreigner and damage your account.
What I recommend is whenever you charge gas, or buy anything in a highway store, you need to keep eye contact on your credit card all the time, if necessary you get out of the car and swipe it yourself. When paying cash, always mention the amount of cash you are giving the person. Like saying, I am giving you 2 $500 bills (correct).....
That happens even to mexicans when traveling on highways.
Another place you can get tricked is at the toll roads.. Always check the change, since many time they give you the coins wrapped on the ticket and you don't check it until you are already on the road again and they can trick 5-10- pesos or more if the change came with 20 peso bills.
Appy this rule on every country you visit.
Mexico: info on Oaxaca City, please:
It all depends on what you are looking for.
Oaxaca is a great place to visit, lots of history (Ancient Ruins), food is great, handcrafts, great restaurants, etc. The only thing that will make some noise, is that Oaxaca has had several conflicts with the education sector (Teachers). They have been in a fight with the government and even if they will not be doing anything to harm tourists, it is sad to be listening to their protests all the time. But for sure you will enjoy OAXACA, one of the best locations I have visited in Mexico.
Mexico: Mexican perception of Afro-Americans:
I would like to express my opinion directly as a Mexican. In Mexico it is rare to see (African-American, Black, etc), however you want to call it. People might find it strange and maybe stare at people, same as if a white travels to Asia or Africa, but looking at people is not offensive, it is just pure curiosity.
If you have had a bad experience with a Mexican, I can say that it is not common and you cannot judge all Mexicans just because you had a bad experience. I have had many had experiences in USA just for my nationality, and at the same time have many really good friends (whites, blacks, asian, etc). By the way, I have Black friends in mexico who love Mexico and they feel the same love towards them by mexicans. I don't know if you are passing through your cultural shock, but be friendly and things will start to look better.
Mexico is a good country and one of its best assets is its PEOPLE.
Mexico: International schools:
Hello Patty,
There are several International Schools in Mexico City but to my opinion you should consider what is best for you as Where to Live or School. If you decide to go to Greengates, you should live close to school since this school if quite far from everything (or at least from the Expat Residential areas). If you will be living in the south of the city, Greengates is not an option. If greengages is a must, you will have to live in Zona Esmeralda and still drive bout 20 - 25 min to get to school. If living in Polanco, Santa Fe, Interlomas you will have to drive 45-65 min each way.
Please let me know your location for housing and can recommend more options.
Mexico: Monterrey:
Hello... Monterrey is the second largest City and second most important for doing business. They have had several drug cartel issues in the past 3 hers, but have solved most of those problems. I won't say it is the safest city in Mexico, but can live there without any concerns now.
If considering moving to Monterrey, you should check San Pedro Garza Garcia, which is a suburb with high security, nice housing, hospitals, malls, schools, etc. It will be much more expensive than living in other areas in Mexico, but trust me, you will fill safe and will adapt much easier since most expats relocate there.
If you live in San Pedro Garza Garcia you won't experience heavy traffic, since traffic is bad for people entering the suburb or leaving it in the afternoon.
Weather can be very hot during summer days (100 F - 110F), and cold in Winter (30 - 35 F).

Mexico: Advice please !!!:

Mexico City is a great place to live as an expat. The expat community is huge, and the location is perfect for weekend travelling. I dont know were your husband will be working, but it is wise to live close to work and close to school.
Weather is one of the big assest in this city. Temp ranges between 12 - 29 on summer, and 5 - 18 during winter. If you want to email me directly, I can send you some information on Mexico City soi that you can start reading about expats in Mexico. jesus.garcia@cetra.com.mx
Mexico: Tips Wanted for Car Trip to Ajijic:
After reading all the information you have posted, I can tell you that in order to get more clients you dont need to scare people. People are not stupid and can read information on the news and everyone is aware that Mexico is having security issues as well as in USA. SFO, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, LA, just to mention some have the same problems you just need to look a little bit closer like you are doing in Mexico. I have lived in Mexico for the past 38 years and can tell you that many things happen, but I go out with my wife and kids and had never experienced anybody on my door to rape, sell drugs, etc. Or had problems with police, people, etc. Either you live in a very bad place and have had too many bad stories, or I dont understand who harmed you on your childhood because Mexico is not what you have described. If you want to talk about numbers, I can bet that 90% of the expats that live in Mexico, as well as 90% of Mexicans enjoy life in Mexico. There are always people who see the bad things in life and make a story out of it, and there are many more that understand dose problems but learn how to enjoy life. Please go and find another blog were you can talk about your negative points of view and see if you can find clients there. This is not the correct one for people like you.
Mexico: San Miguel Allende:
Dear Angie & Curt,
Both places you mentioned are great, but in my opinion too hot to live in and the infrastructure for an expat will never compare to what you can get in San Miguel. SM might be more expensive that the other two, but Hospitals, shopping centers, restaurants, cinemas, etc. plus all the real Mexico you are looking for can only be obtained in SM. I do recommend to plan a trip in order to make sure what I am telling you about, you also have Golf Courses, and less than 45 min you have a wine region (not the best wine, but good to enjoy).
Queretaro is the largest city close to San Miguel which is around 45 minutes in case you need something more specialized, and Mexico City is only 3 hrs away.
I am a San Miguel lover, and that is the reason why I recommend you SM over the other two.
Mexico: Monterrey, Mexico:
If relocating to Monterrey, you should be living in San Pedro Garza Garcia, this is a suburb of Monterrey and for expats it will be your best choice. There you will find many housing options, as well as schools in case you have children, and besides it is a very safe place to be.
