Taiwan: Retired. Not seeking work. How about Taichung?:

Our interest is not in working in Taiwan. We are retired and are looking for a place to live, at least for some several months. NOT interested in buying a place to live; not interested in working. We would like to be in a city with good services (i. e., the light comes on nearly every time the switch is flipped; water flows when the tap is opened). Being able to interact with others of our age and language from time to time would be great. Learning Chinese is beyond me. My Chinese friends here have tried to teach me some over the past year and have recommended I study something else. Taipei seems to be larger and more spread out than we would want to deal with daily. But Taichung seems to be a more manageable size and is close enough to the capital when we would want to go to the symphony, or some other special event, or to fly somewhere else for a time. Any full-time retirees living in Taichung willing to offer input and advice? TIA Joseph

Mexico: Looking for help in GDL:

I live in GDL and will do some checking with friends about a short-term place. I do not personally know of any at this time. I suggest you post your query to the Yahoo! group Guadalajaraamigos @ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/guadalajaraamigos/ E-me direct, if you wish, @ joskel@rocketmail.com Good luck, Joseph

Mexico: Spanish WIndows XP:

When first moving to Mexico several years ago, I had a computer built for me and specified that it have a Spanish language operating system and keyboard. Two years ago, I bought the second computer (Gateway from Sam's Club) and have Spanish XP. I suggest that you learn the Spanish language system and stop worrying about it. But, if you insist, you should be able to obtain an English XP version from a computer tech in your area. You will also need an English language keyboard, however. That may be a more difficult problem. A friend here in GDL finally oradered one from the States and had friends bring it down for her. Have a great day. Joseph

Mexico: Living in or near Colima Mexico:

By all means, spend time in Colima. Rent a place for at least a year. Colima is a beautiful city, however, it is HOT and HUMID for about half of the year. Most places are not air conditioned, so you should spend some time there to find out if it is for you. I was there with friends for the swearing in ceremony for new Mexican citizens just before the 16 de Septiembre celebrations. There was still reconstruction being done on several fo the major builldlings downtown. These buildings were damaged by earthquake activitity more than a year earlier. Earthquake activity is another consideration for Colima. Joseph Joseph

Sri Lanka: Welcome - Please Read!:

What info can you give me about retiring in Sri Lanka? I currently am retired and living in Mexico, but am not cemented to this area. Is there one or more x-pat communities to offer one interaction with English speakers? Are Sri Lankans generally willing to be friendly with x-pats, retirees, and English speakers? Can you give me some idea of what a house with garden area might cost to rent? What amenities are likely to be included? Thanks, Joseph
