Jamaica: Can it be done: find 2 parties to share use of apartment?:
lori,
My immediate reaction to your post was how complicated that sounds. Trying to find one or two "parties" to take your place and work it out who takes it when? Sounds impossibly complicated. First of all, if you are going to be in FL for up to 9 months a year, what earthly sense does it make to try to keep this apartment which you only rent, not own? I can't see ANY financial benefit to you. Certainly there is an active rental market in Jamaica, when you are ready to return, you can just find a place (Airbnb, etc, very active now) for the 3 months. It seems you have made a decision to leave Jamaica, but you still want to keep one foot in the door, which is OK, but the idea your presented doesn't sound feasible. To find people who you would trust with your possessions alone is a challenge in Jamaica. Have you tried asking the landlord if he could sublet it for you? He would have to be told if you do this anyway, I would think. let's see what the others say, but I think you need to go back to the drawing board.
Jamaica: To Rent or to Own - Montego Bay:
Excuse me hambone, did you actually say "Renouncing", meaning renouncing your US Citizenship?? No, I must be wrong. Because guess what, I know a whole heap of Jamaicans that would cut their right hand off to take your place, so I'm sure I misunderstood.
Jamaica: Thinking about moving from US to Montego Bay:
Please have a look at some of the previous threads regarding people who want to drop everything and head to Jamaica. You haven't given enough information to give you a proper opinion. Are you living on an independent income? Healthcare in a developing country is nothing like what you are accustomed to in the UsA. I would take another long vacation and think it over a second time.
Jamaica: Marriage Exemption Certificate:
Rick, your depth of knowledge is impressive and amazing. My compliments. G.
Jamaica: Thinking about moving to Jamaica:
lOL @ Rick!! Took the words right out of my mouth. i've been silent lately simply because the frustration of dealing with these (I call them) "dreamers" who went to Jamaica for 15 minutes and think they found the answer to their problems. Wait until you have an independent income and then come back to us. In the meantime, continue to vacation in Jamaica, they need it!

Lori, you were very smart. I wish more people would take your advice (coming and going). Gardis
Jamaica: Searching and searching online:
Here we go again. Steffanie, I'm sure you're a lovely person,as is your current love interest. You are from a highly developed Western country. Jamaica is a developing nation. You are not, repeat, NOT going to "find a job" in Jamaica. First of all, the Ministry of Labor is not going to give you a work permit. The best thing you can hope for is go on vacations, save your money perhaps for a lengthy stay, and take it from there. I'm surprised it's hard to get the visa to the Netherlands. I thought it was easier for Jamaicans than Canada or the USA (virtually impossible). Good luck.
Jamaica: Major Crine in Negril, Green Island, Montego Bay:
Rick, I think you are emotionally invested in your answer perhaps, but I don't think you are quite correct this time. According to this website, Jamaica has the #3 homicide rate in the world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate_by_decade
Now, I've seen it as low as #5, but never lower than that. the USA comes in at #34. As far as the crime in Chicago, the far preponderance of it is related to gang violence and retribution. No one living in the surrounding areas is afraid to walk around and no one is living with burglar bars on their windows, as you do in Jamaica. Also, we have a population of nearly 320 million. There is simply no rationale for putting Jamaica and the USA in the same sentence. I have no idea what happened in Negril but it is indeed frightening to think by merely taking a walk outside the walls of an "all inclusive", one could be placing ones life at risk. Not good.
Jamaica: residing in Jamaica:
Karen,
You cannot be helped until you describe your situation in more detail, why you are moving, from where are you moving, and what income source you will have, if any, when you arrive in Jamaica. You stated you are going only for the 2nd time. You mentioned very cryptically about marriage. Are you marrying a Jamaican? It makes a lot of difference. Rick very generously answered at length and all you could think to reply was to ask if he was an American (why that is of any import, I am not clear. You are asking the questions, not him), Take some time, provide some context, and maybe someone can help you.
Jamaica: House Building:
Lori, yes that was an excellent and comprehensive answer. I would caution this person also that living abroad and having a house built in Jamaica is, perhaps, not the wisest idea. She should definitely not only be on the island, but living on the site! Stealing of construction materials is a major problem that must be addressed. Personally, I would recommend just buying a ready turn key property. Save yourself a lot of headaches.
