Kenya: Work Permit Changes For NGO/ Non-Profit Employment:
Any applicant being employed by an NGO must now be cleared by the NGO Board to work in Kenya BEFORE they proceed to apply at Immigration. The NGO Board will provide the applicant with a clearance letter which the applicant will then include as part of the documents required for by Immigration. The same goes for Work Permit Renewals.
Note that the NGO Board meets ONCE a month to clear applicants. It is, therefore, important that applicants submit their applications way in advance of the start date of employment.
If applying for a Special Pass instead of Work Permit, the NGO Board can produce the clearance letter for the Special Pass between 2-3 working days.
Below is the process for clearance at the NGO Board;
1. A covering letter from your employer requesting for a recommendation letter for the Work Permit
2. Endorsement Form (can be found on the NGO Board Website)
3. Duly filled Application Forms 22 and 26 (can be found on the Immigration website)
4. Letter of Appointment and Contract
5. Copies of Academic/ Professional Certificates
6. Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)
7. Copy of Applicant’s passport
8. 2 Passport size photos
9. Copy of the Advertisement of the required position (if applicable). If there was no advertisement, kindly give reason in the attached endorsement form
10. The above documents must be provided for in duplicate
11. Processing Fee will cost as follows;
a. Application for Work Permit – KES 20,000
b. Renewal of Work Permit – KES 20,000
c. Special Pass – KES 16,000
d. Appeal – KES 16,000

Kenya: Correction for the Class I Work Permit:
Please be aware that the following Permit is now available to those BELOW 35 years of age;
• Class I - Issued to a member of a missionary society approved by the Government of Kenya and whose presence is beneficial to the country.
The only permit NOT available to those below 35 years of age is the;
• Class K (Retiring in Kenya) - Issued to a person who has an assured income derived from sources outside and undertakes not to accept paid employment of any kind.

Kenya: Have you registered as an Alien?:
All foreigners who remain in Kenya for more than three months (90 days) must register as an alien and obtain an alien registration ID card. It is a legal requirement and failure to do so will attract a hefty fine or imprisonment.

Kenya: WORK PERMIT CLASS/TYPE CHANGES:
For those of you about to apply for/ renew your Work Permit, please note that there have been changes to the type of Work Permit classes so be aware you do not apply for the wrong Class:
• Class A – Issued to persons who intend to engage in prospecting for minerals or mining
• Class B – Issued to persons wishing to invest in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
• Class C - Issued to persons wishing to practice certain prescribed professions, e.g. Journalism, Doctor, etc (for this you must have proof of membership to the prescribed profession here in Kenya including the necessary licenses)
• Class D - Issued to a person who is offered specific employment by a specific employer who is qualified to undertake that employment
• Class F - Issued to investors in the manufacturing sector
• Class G - Issued to investors in trade or business (other than a prescribed profession)
• Class I - Issued to a member of a missionary society approved by the Government of Kenya and whose presence is beneficial to the country. Only eligible to those 35 and above years of age
• Class K - Issued to a person who has an assured income derived from sources outside and undertakes not to accept paid employment of any kind (this is for retirees). Only eligible to those 35 and above years of age
• Class M – Issued to conventional Refugees
Kindly note the processing fees and costs are different for each application. Also note renewals are now required to be done 3 months prior to the expiry date of your current work permit.
