Malaysia: Penang long term stay:
My name is Karl and I'm assisting foreigners who want to settle in Penang. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to post my web page here but you can send me a personal message or google under retire Malaysia and you will find an info page about retirement in Penang pretty much at the top.
Malaysia: Resident and Non-resident tax status:
You will need to be in Malaysia for more than 182 day in order for your company to calculate your tax according to the salary. If you stay in Malaysia for less than 182 days in a calendar year the company must deduct the highest percentage of tax from your salary. You can claim the overpaid tax when you file your income tax the next year

Malaysia: Visa run:
Hi Gregkh,
Visa runs are not a favorable option in Malaysia. Immigration does not like the visa runners and as soon as they think they got one they will give her/him only a 2 week visa at the best.
But since you are married to a Malay Citizen it shouldn’t be a problem to get the spouse program visa. Its a lot of paperwork i.e. wedding photos, confirmation by a court that you are still married etc. but if got all this you will get the visa. For the first application they might give you only 2 years but the renewal is usually 5 years. With the spouse program you can also apply for work permit with any company in Malaysia. You only need to show an employment agreement. It differs to other employment passes by no requirement of a minimum salary, qualifications and the company’s approval to employ an expat.
Malaysia: Moving to malaysia from usa:
Hi Razzi5000,
Moving to Malaysia is a great idea if you are a bit flexible and if you don't expect the same environment and behavior as in US.
The food is great, the people are friendly , the weather permanent warm and it is quite cheap to live here.
I’m living in Penang for more than 25years and never regretted it. I prefer to live on an island surrounded by the sea and enjoying the usual breeze here. The lifestyle is also a bit more rural here.
If you want more details you could PM me.
Malaysia: Retirement in Penang:
Hi Hong Kong Bob?,
Penang is a really good choice for retirement but it might be a bit early to check for a place to stay if you intend to move there in a couple of years. There are always some new condos coming up and you might have chosen an apartment with construction just starting next to you when you move in.
But anyhow Marina Bay is very good choice if it is the right block (not block C) and away from Jalan Tanjong Tokong. The E&O condos around Straits Quay are in my opinion overpriced for what they offer. Only one tower has unobstructed sea view (in the moment) and all others enjoy the view into their neighbors apartment.
I’m in the kitchen furniture business and did quite a number of kitchens for Cathy and other people from HK. By this I know most of the condos’ pros and and cons and if you want some insider advise we could meet for a beer when you are in Penang.
Malaysia: Can dependent Visa hold get work permit in Malaysia:
I don't know which country my2cents is referring to because generally the Malaysian Government wants to encourage dependents to work.
Unfortunately the regulations are not very helpful but I know from our experience that the approval for the post (1st stage) is usually given to companies who apply. The big questions will be if the company who is willing to employ you wants to do all the paperwork. Below are the regulations:
"Working conditions for Dependent Pass holder:
The Husband/Wife of the Expatriate Officer holding the Dependent Pass is permitted to work without having to change his/her Dependent Pass to the Employment Pass on condition that he/she acquires working approval from the Immigration Department Terms and conditions
1. Job Offer from any company/Government Agency
2. Prior approval from approving agencies such as: MIDA, MDEC, Bank Negara, Securities Commission, Public Services Department.
3. For those without approval from any agency, application is subjected to conditions laid down by the Expatriate Committee."
(Note by kebinger): The procedure is the same as for any work permit approval. First step is for the company to get the approval of the post. It is easier to get it if they apply for a "Dependent". The conditions could be found: http://www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/m...ion-for-a-post "Procedures - Work Permit by Endorsement
1. Applications can be submitted to the Employment Pass Division of the Immigration Headquarter Putrajaya or the nearest Immigration Office in any state.
2. Applications for Work Permit by Endorsement can be submitted on approval of the Dependents for application: i. Cover letter and Letter of Authority from the company.
ii. DP11 Form iii. Job offer or Employment Contract
iii. A photocopy of the complete passport.
Fees Charged - Free"
Malaysia has a shortage of qualified people in any field an IT professionals a rare species here. That's why the government gives incentives to those who start an IT business here.
Just for the record: A spouse of a Malaysian can work in any field and will be given a work permit without and restrictions. If a doctor does not qualify as doctor the health department won't allow him/her to work.
Malaysia: Moving to Malaysia:
Hi Harald,
short answer to short questions.
1) depend on your visa
2) everyone can buy a house in Malaysia - one still would need a visa to stay long term.
3) Malaysia my second Home (MM2H) 10 years renewable
4) Good idea - I live in Penang for 25 years and never regretted.
Get more info through a webpage I'm not allowed to mention but if you search retire Penang it's pretty much on top of the first page and shows retire info in Malaysia.
Malaysia: Banking in Malaysia:
It seem 99% is not good enough.
You can open a bank account without having MM2H or any other long term visa. Or explain how to apply for MM2H and open a fixed deposit account for the approval of MM2H if you are not allowed to open a bank account? Just recently two of my customers opened one.
Everyone can buy property in Malaysia – no need to have an address in Malaysia.
Only MM2H visa holder in the State of Penang may buy property below RM 1 Mio but above RM 500 k. It has nothing to do with the age.
