Ecuador Welcome Forum: ACCOMODATION in LOJA?:

Live in QUito for past three years plus and want to explore Loja again. Will be in Loja 11/21-11/24 Please email me directly if you have a simple accomodation -- I am a good cook and share easily. Hope to find a low cost or gratis place to stay for two nights. sueb4bs@yahoo.com THanks, SSchloth

Ecuador: medical care:

IMO, it is nuts to burn your bridges re: Medicare. In years ahead, the penalties will only get larger. Lived in Quito almost 2 years and think I know a little about this...And yes, I insure with Travel Guard each trip which covers my out of pocket expenses (the last claim filed was for $400. ) through the year or half-year until the next trip. I recommend TG. sueb4bs

Ecuador: Short term rental in Loja:

There is one surefire way and the way many of us have done it --- travel to Loja (have you been there yet?) and start looking, talking with people and yes, looking for signs in the windows. This is not the U.S. and there are not a lot of shortcuts, unless you have FAMILY here, maybe . For me, in Quito, for example, I am well-connected and it has taken me a month or two of looking -- real estate people have been no help. Lived here 1.5 years and this is one area of life here that is not easy. YOu will find something but go and search on the ground yourself.is my suggestion.

Ecuador: Correa and the question of Free Speech:

Forgive me , ginarnold I PM you cuz I thought you were a white WOMAN from your previous great post....YOur lengthy piece here again reveals your thoughts clearly with reference to sensitivity to race and other complications of life in the U.S. today. This is a centuries-old issue when race and power came with the colonialists from the UK., leading to murders of the indigenous in the U.S West where I lived and slavery Each of us, in whatever country, but esp in the U.S. ( the foremothers and fathers stated this clearly)bears responsibility for all our brothers and sisters.. THanks and right on, brother. However, I think the central issue is that the U.S., is dead on arrival . I have worked in the public sector for 35 years, in community health , in public education and two legislatures (CA and CT) and the political system has been for years and years moribund (that's dying, for you who are not word people) and is now TOTALLY ROTTED THROUGH --and completely corrupted. It ain't about RACE or the President, but the political system in the U.S. is completely corrupted by BIG< BIG MONEY and a desperate and perverse need to MURDER DEMOCRACY as we know it. THey are doin' it today! I am in exile from the U.S. because I could not stand to watch so much suffering of the little people in my small town in Southern Oregon. They are quite helpless in the face of this crushing power. Obama along with us, most of us anyway, are bystanders and quite powerless. That's all I got. Thanks..

Ecuador: Groceries.:

Thanks for this cost information for Cuenca. Is this current market? I am wondering --I live in Quito-- costs are higher here and have been going up for the two years I've been here. Still a good bargain vis a vis the U.S., I know that! sueb4bs

Ecuador: Move to Ecuador or Panama? Help?:

Great advice... sinego, you are one of the more rational minds here... Just do it...and remember life is short... sueb4bs

Ecuador: Sweet and Coffee:

Who the hell cares? WHy do you care so much to write about STARBUCK'S?? Just curious... I personally am delighted there are fewer U.S. junk food outlets here than in CHile where I previously lived two years> Chile is now a replica of the stuff I am thrilled to leave behind.in the U.S... takes all types of folks from the U.S./Canada to relocate to this continent... I guess... Love to stimulate a thread/discussion about this issue... sueb4bs

Ecuador: Article in NYTimes on life in Cañar Province:

Thanks for posting this note about this recent NY Times article by Judy Blankenship... Her book about the people of Canar is wonderful source material on the life in the part of Los Andes she references. Her photographs are memorable as well. She is also an Oregonian as I am and I will read this Time's piece eagerly! Appreciate your interest in posting this... sueb4bs in Quito

Ecuador: Anyone tried rafting in Banos?:

I traveled to Banos cheap as an independent traveler in mid-March and did.not know what to expect. I loved Banos! I live in a pueblito in rural Southern Oregon and this little town was right for me. I planned to stay with an Ecuadorian friend who teaches Spanish locally and has a share house, pretty funky but nice for me. I stayed 4 nights, walked all over (great touristy but nice town for walking), terrific thermal baths near the waterfall, I loved the raft trip, exciting, I fell out into the river and was ably fished back into the boat by the careful, excellent guide -- the restaurants I tried were disappointing overall and definitely not cheap. I recommend walking to find good alnmuerzo places. My great adventure was hiking to the Virgin and Luna Runtuntun, it takes about three hours and is for the vigorous but is a wonderful hike, high above Banos, and a great little cafe at the top for a beer and food, if you like. PM me for the names of specific places, if you like buen viaje! sueb4bs

Ecuador: lawyers:

Very good advice, larry. Lawyers here are smart -- in the past two years or so, they are charging way too much, mine dumped me in the midst of the U.S. transactions and facilitiators are much better and cheaper. overall. A tip: get a recommendation for someone who has been helpful to a friend. It is called "connections." (I ended up doing my own visa and cedula. I would love to have had a local facilitatior but could not find one. I consider lawyers here now clearly involved in unethical practice and corruption.)
