Guatemala: Insulin choices in Guatemala:

My husband is insulin dependent and uses Humalog as well. He has not used Insulex N, but he does buy his Humalog from Canada at about $29 CD. We go to Canada twice a year and so buy it at Costco there and then bring down about 6-7 months worth. But you can also order it online. Am not sure if this is an option for you, but thought I would throw it out there. Unfortunately, the online Canadian sources are astronomical (over $300 for a 10 ml vial!) due to U.S. pharma and gov't. pressure. U.S. law says that only drug manufacturers can import prescription drugs into the U.S., but U.S. Customs allows personal use. They say 3 months worth, but my husband has never been questioned and we have been doing this for many years.

Guatemala: Searching for Expats for interviews:

My husband and I are retired and have lived at Lake Atitlan full time for over 4 years. We lived here part time (4-6 months per year) for 10 years before that. We will be available to talk after Nov. 15. Just message us through this forum. Good luck on your project.

Guatemala: What things should I bring?:

If you love good, natural peanut butter you can easily make it yourself using a food processor. Either bring one or buy it here. I just starting doing this and it is easy and really good. Buy raw peanuts in the mercado.

Guatemala: Questions - Lake Atitlan:

Washing Clothes: I own my own home and have a washing machine and dryer, but there are laundry services in Panajachel, Santiago, San Pedro, Santa Cruz. Many people I know simply hand-wash light-weight clothing and then take in their heavier weight clothes, sheets, towels to be done by the laundry service. Laundry services charge by the pound. There are several Lake Atitlan real estate rental managers on this Forum and I am sure they will contact you. Also, check bulletin boards in the town where you are interested. If you are on Facebook, there are community Facebook pages for many of the Lake Atitlan communities. Rentals are often posted there or you can post an inquiry yourself. If you are interested in Santa Cruz la Laguna, I maintain of page of our local rentals: http://santacruzlalaguna.weebly.com/rentals-property-sales.html Bill Paying: Electricity is paid at a bank. Rent and internet payment methods will have to be negotiated with the individuals.

Guatemala: Transferwise:

I have just learned about Transferwise though it has been around for while. They have great rates for international money transfers though they currently don't do transfers to Guatemala Quetzals. But one can VOTE to have it added as they are looking to increase the different currencies. Obviously, if they see a need they will fill it faster. So vote for Guatemala! Go to their home page, then "Recipient Gets". Scroll down through the different currencies all the way to the bottom where it says "Other." A screen will pop up that will allow you to vote for a currency. I was just helping a friend do a transfer from her U.S. bank to Brazil for an upcoming trip. The flat fee was 2%. The fees and thresholds vary according to currencies. For example to send money to the UK it is 1% on the first $5,000 and .7% on anything more with a minimum fee of $3. https://transferwise.com

Guatemala: Buying large appliances:

We also are on Lake Atitlan and recently upgraded our stove. We could not find what we wanted in Panajachel or Solola, but we did NOT go to Xela or Antigua. Instead we were in Guatemala City for other things and went to a Curacao where we found exactly what we were looking for. The local Curacao did not have it. The Guate City Curacao shipped it FREE to Panajachel for us. You will find a better selection in Guatemala City.

Guatemala: D&O Insurance in Guatemala:

Hello, I am with a U.S. based nonprofit that does all of its work in Guatemala. We are looking into Directors and Officers Insurance because we are employing quite a few people now, primarily Guatemalans. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Would we get the insurance in the U.S. or through a Guatemalan insurance company. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
