United States: Advice needed on negotiating short term relocation:
Hello
I work for a small company in the UK, and have been selected to take part in a 3 month project in a large city in the US, where my company wants to establish a new base.
I'm looking for advice on what to negotiate and what is reasonable for this term.
I am in my early thirties and have a long-term partner with whom I live. We have a mortgage, but no children. I know she would love to go, and would consider taking a short sabbatical from her job, but I get the feeling my company they do not consider moving partners unless married.
At present, I understand there to be no salary increase, no per diem, no miscallaneous lump sum, nor will they offer any spousal assistance. They will pay for my flights out and shared accommodation with 1 other colleague who is going.
I am considering taking up the offer if I can secure my own accommodation (I'm not keen on doing a room share at 31..).
My question to you is, what would be a reasonable ratio for off days and on days. E.g, 5 weeks on, 1 week off? 15% personal time? 'x' number of trips back home on the company dime - and for what duration?
Whilst on the surface it seems like a great opportunity, I feel they have neglected that it is emotionally very difficult to be away from friends and family.
Really looking forward to your thoughts on what I should be looking for.
Thanks.
