Jordan: Car Assistance:
Hi there
Only the diplomatic community is 1) exempted from the regulation regarding registering vehicles above 5 years of age 2) purchasing a vehicle on duty-free.
As for buying a car from Zarqa, someone we know had the experience and it can be sum up as “Buyer’s Luck”. A good piece written on purchasing second-hand vehicle in Jordan is available on: http://www.internations.org/forum/show_post/1445536#1445536
In case you are not able to open the link, the summary: You need to obtain the VIN number of the vehicle you are interested to purchase to check its history on websites like CarFax, Autocheck, and Epic VIN (all three). It has been said that most of the second-hand cars in the country are salvaged cars in the USA but they got fixed beautifully. Thereafter, you need to have the car tested in Amman. Some banks and some people use the company Al Shareef Car Test Center. This company will give a report that rates 7 things: Chassis rating (front right and left, back right and left), the engine, the gear and the axle. Second-hand cars are advertised on OpenSouq.com and Dubizzle.com (get an Arabic speaker to assist).
Cheers
Jordan: Arabic speaking nanny and House help:
Hi there
There are several ways to do this. You can actually use the service of an agents to employ a nanny for you. A better forum to get more information on Amman is the Internations. Check it out here: http://www.internations.org//forum/local?ref=he_fo
You need to create a profile.

Jordan: Looking for short & long term accommodation:
Hello
We are looking for short term accommodation from 5 Aug to mid Oct 2014.
My husband and I will be travelling from Harare.
The dogs will go into a kennel in Harare for about 2 weeks until we send for them at the end of August 2014. Because of the dogs, we will need a garden.
My office will be at UNRWA, at Bayader Wadi el Seer.
We are arranging for a taxi to take me to work and back until we can sort out our transport so for that reason, I don’t want to live too far away but it needs to also be a place my husband can find coffee shops and things easily. He will be job hunting.
Must have cable TV with English channels
Budget: US$1,400 – 1,600 a month
Location: Dair Ghbar (preferably) or Abdoun
As for the long term accommodation, it is contingent upon the arrival of our personal effects from Harare. This is estimated to be around mid Oct 2014.
Duration of rent: About 2 years.
Must have a garden
About 3 bedrooms
We don’t need a furnish place because we will bring our furniture with us but we need air-condition units
The place must be modern and with open plan concept
Please – no mirrors on walls or ceilings!!
Budget: US$1,500 a month
Location: Dair Ghbar (preferably) or Abdoun

Karen
Thailand: Thailand a week after the coup:
Thanks for posting the update from the perspective of someone currently living in Thailand.
Thailand: Moving to Bangkok - Accommodation:
Hello
We are thinking of moving to Bangkok in July 2014. Appreciate receiving information regarding potential suburbs to live with good public transport network to the United Nations Office located on Rajdamnern Nok Avenue and Klong Phadung Krungkasem Road. Since we have two dogs that will relocate with us so our new accommodation needs to take this into account.
