Some Forum Posts:

Malaysia: foreigner starting a business:

It depends what kind of business you intent to open and what is your financial and professional background. There are good webpages you can get better information than from a lawyer or accountant. Unfortunately its restricted to post them. You will need to contact me by pm.

Malaysia: Visa status/info:

Many people do that and there is no procedure for it because it is not an official way for staying in Malaysia. Some people do it over years wihout a problem, some get already a shortened visa after 3 crossings. It depends on the officer (her/his mood) if you'll get the 3 months again. The longer the break the better the chances. They have hotels and guest houses in Thailand

Malaysia: Recommendation for Hotel in Penang:

Recommending a hotel is always difficult because one prefers a good breakfast and another one a fantastic view. For hotel I always use Agoda and for short term without service I made good experience with ibilik.

Malaysia: Visit for Retirement Plan:

Hi tbahder, Coming to Malaysia for such a short period I also would recommend focusing on KL and Penang. Most of the Expats who are retired in Malaysia live in one of these two cities. It depends on the lifestyle you intend to indulge in in the future. KL is the capital with international embassies and company headquarters and therefore most probably a bit more “fancy”. Penang is more laid back, relaxing und good for food and beaches. I live here now for more than 20 years – never regretted – and until now can’t understand why someone wants to live in KL. If you want some inside info over a nice cold beer just send me a PM.

Malaysia: Considering move to Malaysia:

For sure you read that Malaysia was again ranked third worldwide for places to retire in 2014. And the ranking comes from the American Magazine International Living which usually focuses more on closer countries. There must be a reason for it. Have a look yourself and enjoy the friendliness of the people, the unbelievable wide range of good food, and lot of sunny days. Try out the different places which might be your thing, like bust Kuala Lumpur, romantic Melaka or the laidback food-heaven Penang. If you are interested in a chat combined with a cool beer you can contact me when in Penang.

Malaysia: Citizenship in Malaysia:

I wouldn’t know anyone from any other country who got the Malaysian Citizenship. I live here for more than 20 years and my mother in law for more than 50 and she did not get it.

Malaysia: Visa for same sex spouse:

Hi Zach, I assume (from you name) you are Jewish and for sure you are gay. That’s fine with me but somehow it reminds me at “Lethal Weapon 2” when Danny Glover went to the South African Embassy. I hope you don’t misunderstand what I’m saying.

Malaysia: American moving to Malaysia: African Wife:

Malaysia is a multicultural society per se; you and your wife should’t have any problems. Mostly I see the difficulties the other way around. The people of Malaysia are very flexible and extremely tolerant. Many times I noticed the expats make themselves their own lives more difficult than necessary by expecting that everything should work the same way as in their home country. It just doesn’t and why should they change their lifestyle to the “better” expat-style one.

Malaysia: Rentals:

Hi rogerjohn, there are quite a number of apartments in the range of RM 1700 to RM 2400 in the area you are looking for. Unfortunately the big and most obvious webpages are in my opinion not of big help because if you call the agent for a specific unit it is most probably not available any more or not to the conditions mentioned. Buying a property for RM 200 k won’t be possible in Penang anymore and generally as foreigner the min. purchase price for property is RM 2 Mio since 2014.

Malaysia: getting sponsored to work in Malaysia without work visa:

Generally the Malaysian Government wants to encourage dependents to work. Unfortunately the regulations are not very helpful but I know from our experience that the approval for the post (1st stage) is usually given to companies who apply. The big questions will be if the company who is willing to employ you wants to all the paperwork. Below are the regulations: "Working conditions for Dependent Pass holder The Husband/Wife of the Expatriate Officer holding the Dependent Pass is permitted to work without having to change his/her Dependent Pass to the Employment Pass on condition that he/she acquires working approval from the Immigration Department Terms and conditions 1. Job Offer from any company/Government Agency 2. Prior approval from approving agencies such as: MIDA, MDEC, Bank Negara, Securities Commission, Public Services Department. 3. For those without approval from any agency, application is subjected to conditions laid down by the Expatriate Committee." Note by kebi: the procedure is the same as for any work permit approval. First step is for the company to get the approval of the post. It is easier to get it if you apply for a "Dependent". The conditions could be found: http://www.imi.gov.my/index.php/en/m...ion-for-a-post "Procedures - Work Permit by Endorsement 1. Applications can be submitted to the Employment Pass Division of the Immigration Headquarter Putrajaya or the nearest Immigration Office in any state. 2. Applications for Work Permit by Endorsement can be submitted on approval of the Dependents for application: i. Cover letter and Letter of Authority from the company. ii. DP11 Form iii. Job offer or Employment Contract iv. A photocopy of the complete passport. Fees Charged - Free"
