Advice for New Expats

Don't expect things to run like your home country. Listen more than you talk. Observe. Make acquaintances before you make friends. Don't assume the way you relate to friends at home is the same way to relate to people in new country.

Jamaica: Can it be done: find 2 parties to share use of apartment?:

Okay, tell me the what could happen here, bad and good, if there is any. I have been renting a studio apartment in Negril for 7 years. It is a good place for many reasons. But I am no longer on the idea of living in Jamaica as I found a place in Florida and that's where I am going to be 7-9 months of the year. I also travel to another state in the summer months. I don't feel ready to give up the studio, it is still the main place I want to stay when I come to Jamaica. But its really on my mind and I want to lessen the mental concerns. I also don't like it to sit empty for so much time either. Buildings do best when someone lives in them. Also its good for it to get cleaned up regularly I was thinking of looking for 1-2 different parties (maximum 2 people per party) to share use of the apartment. Each party would commit in advance, to rent for 3-6 months of the year. Their stays could be broken up but a minimum of 30 days at a time. We'd adjust our schedules where possible so all parties get their desired time. I'd want people like me, not too fussy, care about the place to look after it almost like their own. I would move out my personal stuff and just leave functional basics: bedding, dishes/cookware, cleaning supplies. Its not a fancy place; the kitchen and bathroom are rudimentary. Furnishings basic. (the bed is NEW and firm) But the location, space, balconies, known neighborhood etc. make it a real gem for the right person/people. What do you think, could I find responsible people, could there be any peace in a deal like this or only more to worry about?

I think you lost your mind...somewhere.

Jamaica: Thinking about moving to Jamaica:

Stay in Florida LOL. I just moved my us-base to Florida and LOVE IT. It has much of what I like about Jamaica but a lot easier to get around, get things done and no f*ck*ry to outwit on a daily basis. I have things/people to get back to Jama but I am too content here to feel enthusiastic about going. And my experiences in Ja have been good! But man, its a lot of 'work'.

Jamaica: Immigration Requirements for Starting Up a Business in Jamaica:

Hi, its a convoluted process, many steps, fees to pay, documents to get certified, etc. I was never clear how one would get a business started at the same time as having restrictions on length of stay. I had acquired a How To Start A Business manual from one of the Labour offices, it was about $2,500 jmd. That was helpful, although some of the processes may have changed. Look up the business registration website, sorry I do not know the addy. If no one else knows just do some searching on your own, you will find them. There is naming a business, registering a business, getting taxpayer registration, etc. You may have to go back and forth to your home country a couple times. When they require certified documents, they will expire after 6 months. Be prepared with at least 3 copies of everything. Things may not always be efficient or logical. Make sure you have a real money-making business or you will be doing the monthly and annual run-around and paying fees and taxes just to stay in the country. After looking into it I decided coming and going was a better option for me, until/unless something else came up.

Jamaica: Jobs for US Hairdresser?:

Hi Monica, The big resorts have their own salons and spas, and there are also other people providing hair and makeup services especially for wedding parties. Not to say it can't be done, but it would be almost like going there to be a taxi driver or open a restaurant, many doing it. Even if a hotel wanted to hire you, some of them are in arrears on their tax situations and will not be able to sign off on the paperwork you would need from them. I say this knowing someone who dealt with them same way. How do you know you can't afford to live on the beach in the US? I have been learning about real estate and such in Florida. The beach communities know they have to keep rental properties available for service workers to live in the area because housing prices are so high. I was surprised that for some of the selling prices of multi-family properties, the rents they are receiving are kind of low. Example: 2-apartment property offered at $300K, collecting rent of $700 and $800. Also the Fla beach communities are kind of sweet, many have their post offices located in the back of gift shops. Many towns have a weekly local markets, folks from all over the world, appreciation of outdoor living, tropical environment/plants. If you are serious on Jamaica, you need to spend at least 3 months at a time, on several occasions. You would need to do that anyway, just to explore getting a job or starting a business.

Jamaica: Nurse jobs in Jamaica:

Hi Nurseshan, welcome to the forum! I can tell you what I know via a US nurse already there trying to work in her field. Pay for a nurse in a private doctor's clinic is approx. US $20-25/day. Have you ever been inside a hospital in Ja? I visited someone in Kingston Public Hospital >}shudder{<. The private hospitals are better, but I also visited someone at Mobay Hope (since replaced by Hospiten) and it was still a far cry from first world facility. The lab (next to private doctor's clinic) where I go for tests provides a half-bandaid to cover the needle hole, not sterile at all. (note to self: take my own) I know a Ja'n trained as what US calls 'certified nursing assistant', pay at an old folks' home is JMD $30,000/month. Read the Jamaica Observer and Jamaica Gleaner newspapers online. Search Nurses, search Hospital, etc. and read the articles that come up. A few years ago there was an expose' on biopsies being stored on-site (un-refrigerated) instead of being sent to laboratories. Currently there is an expose' on dead babies - children under age of 2 who have caught infections, perhaps at the hospitals. I think there was something in the news this year about nurse protests, I don't recall if it was over pay, supplies or something else.

Jamaica: purchasing a car:

Rick, I can't access with the link, is there a Thread Title and date to look for? Or if you post in it, it will come to the top again.

Jamaica: Car Rental:

Hire a driver, that's how most ppl do it :)

Jamaica: dental insurance:

Don't know if they have 'dental insurance'. Find out the cost, it will be LESS than in the US, I'm sure! I pay $35 for lab work that would probably cost $350 in the US. Insurance makes things more expensive.

Jamaica: Major Crine in Negril, Green Island, Montego Bay:

"This month a murder at or outside of an all inclusive hotel in Negril" Please provide specifics of this, as I haven't heard of it (yet). re: Credit Card theft, early in 2016 there WAS some kind of ATM/CC fraud activity going on with the Brazil processor for cc's in Latin America (I was affected), but to my knowledge, that has stopped. Is that what you are referring to, and do you have info that it is currently going on? I just came back from 5 weeks, it was the quietest, most peaceful time I have experienced. I was hesitant to go, with it being back-to-school and slow season, and a murder in my shopping district a few days before my arrival. But murders always have a 'reason', not random. Don't piss off anyone ;-)
