Ecuador: Being a "perpetual tourist" in Ecuador:

We are working through the process right now of extending our tourist visas in Ecuador. We have the initial 90 day tourist visas right now. We are applying for extended visas, which are an ADDITIONAL 180 days. That's 9 months of being here legally. It's not hard to get the extension, but it costs about $200 and we're having someone walk us through the process, so there's a fee for that too. We started out in Belize and have been through all of Central America over the last year, using border crossings to renew if we wanted to stay somewhere longer. We were stunned to find out that you can't do that here in Ecuador. Nine months is good enough for us to explore and move on. :-)
