Jamaica: Is it plausable for a single mother to make this transition? How soon is to soon to plan a transition from the US to JA?:
hi Nikki, I'm moving to Jamaica in February. I was originally planning on moving in May and then July. Things came up and I wasn't able to make the move when planned. Four more months and I'll finally be able to move. I know that as an American you can stay in Jamaica 6 months in each calendar year, unless you change your status through work or open your own business, you won't be able to stay there longer than 6 consecutive months. If I were you, I would try for a few months and if you are still in love with the island, then figure out a way to maky your stay permanent. Have you decided what part of JA you are moving to?
Jamaica: Lawyer for setting up a business in Jamaica:
How much does it cost to set up an incorporation through an attorney? Does anyone know?
Jamaica: I'm struggling with the cultural differences!:
I've noticed this a lot as well. When I go, my boyfriend and I go out and he is always by my side, but I look around and most couples are not hanging out with each other. I wonder also if this will happen to us after I'm living there, I hope not! I'm also always in search for interracial looking couples, hoping to find a foreign girlfriend I can relate too, etc. This is one of the major reasons I joined this website, in hopes to find other girls moving or already living there. I've found that most Jamaican women don't open up as fast as women in other cultures, they are very reserved to let new people in, at least that has been my experience. I've been going to Jamaica for two years, about 10 trips, and it took about 5 visits before my boyfriend's sister and her girlfriends opened up to me. Please keep us posted as your situation in this matter evolves. Good luck!
Jamaica: Studio or Small Apartment in Negril:
Can anyone tell me how much is a small apartment one room, living room, small kitchen in Negril for a 6 month to a year contract? anyone who is already living there might be able to answer this question better since I would like to get the local price for a long term rental as opposed to a vocational/seasonal rental. I don't care about AC or a bunch of amenities, I would like a place where I can live as a local would. Of course it has to be very clean and also safe without having to be in a gated community. I'm talking about a little apartment in a street where locals live, etc. My boyfriend lives in a small fishing community about 45 mins from Negril, and that where I'll be staying, but I think eventually I would like to be in Negril so I just want to have an idea of how much this would cost. Thanks in advance!!
Jamaica: Decision:
Alice, I love your post, your will to adventure and following your dreams, I can relate to the feeling. My boyfriend is Jamaican and we've been in a long distance relationship for almost two years. I"m going to Jamaica in May, and giving it a try for 3 about months, hopefully I'll decide to stay. Jamaica is beautiful and vibrant country, but I feel I can't make a decision to move permanently based on short visits. Like you, I've lived in a few countries in the past and feel I am able to adapt to my surroundings easily, give up on some luxuries to take the beauty and gratification of simple island living, but Jamaica will no doubt be a challenge! That's why I'm trying to keep my feet grounded while keeping an open mind. After researching and researching for over a year now, I'm convinced it will be near impossible to find a job there. I've asked and asked, people that have moved there and people that are Jamaicans, they all say the same "you have to open your own business" So before investing money in opening a business I decided I have to live there and make sure that Jamaica is the place I want to be and settle down, like LoriB says I want to make sure I would live there by myself if I had to. So that's what i'm planning on doing. I haven't really thought about what kind of business to start, I want to base my decision taking one step at a time. For now, my first step is checking the country out and making sure I can live there, once I've been there for a few months and if I decide to stay I'm hoping Jamaica will give me an answer on what business I need to get myself into and go from there. I know it paperwork to start a legitimate business is about $2,500, and this includes a work permit for about a year. Good luck and lets stay in touch, one of the girls in this forum has started a FAcebook page for us all, check it out,

Jamaica: its official im coming to Jamaica:
Congratulations!! I can feel the excitement in your post. I have also told my boss I'm leaving in May, it is very scary for me since I've never been on the island longer than 10 days at a time, but there's no other way to find out. I'm very excited for you and all of us. We have a good support system going on :)
Jamaica: i made a group on FB for EXPATs:
I found it! I sent a request, that was an awesome idea, thanks!
Jamaica: Call me crazy...:
I'm doing the same thing! I'm moving there next year to see if my boyfriend and I are a match or not. I've also been going back and forth a lot. I don't think it's crazy, I think we are just risk taker and to me that's a good thing. As Lori and Lovinlife advised, I'm just going there for about 3 to 6 months next year to see if I can actually make Jamaica my permanent home and live with my boyfriend. I think after 6 months I would have a clearer idea about whether i want to stay there and at that point plan for a business since I've heard is very hard to get employment there. Like you I won't have to pay rent as I'll be living with my boyfriend, I hope to live off my savings for the first 6 months and then see what kind of business to start. What parish will you be living in?
Jamaica: Brit moving to Jamaica and starting a business?:
Hello,
I think it's a lot easier for someone who is a resident to open a business since you won't need to get a business or work permit visa, if you can get residency through your wife.
