Advice for New Expats

Learn as much as you can, on line , from books and people who already live where you want to live. Going on holiday to a place is often very different from living there. Get to know and understand local customs, food, people, and the pluses and minuses of living in a new place, be flexible. Check out medical facilities and ease and cost of flying into and out of your new found homeland

I would love to live in...

Im already doing it

Belize: Where to get shampoo etc.:

if you use special shampoos, cosmetics etc bring them with you, you dont have a big choice. dont bring anything leather. just lightweight stuff, flip flops T shirts , something comfortable to walk in. and Deet is available everywhere. Also bring your own sun barrier creams if like particular ones.

So whats wrong with the cab , pretty darn cheap and very convenient or are you trying to save every last dime. Of course shanks pony is real cheap to, but very sweaty

doesnt seem to open

Saint Lucia: Retiring in Saint Lucia:

Hi You need to be in the north of the island , preferably around the Rodney bay area which has everything you need. Prices for property are high, renting is a good way to go check out www.bluereefrealestate.com and i would look on airbnb for somewhere to stay in the bay area. good luck

Belize: Those Posting Not Living In Belize:

Very good advice Brad, i dont know if we would ever buy there again, invest our capital and use the income to rent, that gives you security and the ability to move very quickly. Remember the statistics say that 60% leave Belize within 3 yrs. This is particularly true for older expats who become long term ill and have to return to there home countries for long term medical needs. You have to come live here a short 2 wk vacation is pointless.

United States: Affordable co housing?:

Hi the west coast is expensive, have you looked at Florida, there are many retirement communities there. Are you an American citizen?

Belize: places to buy in Belize:

Hi Ken, good to hear of some of the medical imrovements but your totally wrong about San Pedro, Mayor Danny made a statement today that theyve had the land , just opp. Bowen & Bowen , for 5 yrs but Min. of Health has not come forward with the finances and any inquiries to them go unanswered. so its probably going to be yrs until anything decent happens in the busiest tourism centre ion Belize, they are going to kill the cash cow if they dont start to spend money on the most important requuirements and their state of impecunity makes for a long wait

Belize: public vs private heatlh care facilities:

Yes , have to agree with Allen on this. only yesterday a groups of Ambergis caye residents were out protesting against the lack of a hospital; on the caye, its been promised but gov. havent a penny in the kitty. Sadly a young woman who had had treatment at the clinic but needed more urgent attention died at Tropic air department lounge while waiting for a plane to Belize city .

Belize: Best place for family with kids?:

Hi The best of everything , especially schools and great out door living is on Ambergris caye IMHO You can get long term rentals there around $1500/month. you need bicycles or rent a golf cart. great place to be for 6 to 12 months.

Belize: Golf Cart Permits on Caye Caulker:

Hi. Belize has no handicapped allowances , not even for citizens. I read somewhere one of you has a bad back . Remember golf carts are for golf courses, my wife hurt her back riding in our golf cart on AC . A bicycle might be good anyway.
