Jamaica: Should I Move Need Your Help:
The USD may be worth more here, but you'll find yourself paying more to have a comparable life - but I'd say it's pretty much at par.
As for kids... my daughter is happy here and she is challenged at her school. And to be honest, it's a different pace - and I'm thrilled to see her off her cell phone and away from her computer and just enjoying being a kid.
Safety... I live in a beautiful new gated community. My neighbours were robbed 2 weeks after they moved in.
Jamaica: Abuse in JA:
I know of a woman who was beaten by her husband and dragged behind his car. When she went to the police, they told her to go home and work on her marriage. That pretty much sums up the JA attitude on domestic abuse.
Jamaica: I'm struggling with the cultural differences!:
I moved to Mobay a month ago from Canada with my Jamaican husband. He lived for 20 years in the US and 2 years in Canada, so it's safe to say we both have a very foreign mentality. Overall, I'm very happy here - I have a great house, my daughter is well adjusted at her new school, the weather is beautiful and I'm handling the super slow pace and bureaucratic bs. What I am struggling with is the male dominated culture and the way couples socialize!
We recently had a couple over. I had images of us having dinner, sitting around the couch drinking wine and talking, maybe playing cards... but no. My husband and his friend went into the yard for 4 hours while I was left to entertain his wife alone in the living room. This isn't how I was raised. My husband has a sort of "when in Rome" mentality, but I think I'll go crazy if I don't find some similar minded friends.
I would really like to find some expat friends... or in the very least similar couples who share our mentality. We are 40 years old, down to earth, with an 11 year old daughter.
Thanks
Rina
Jamaica: So I'm here!:
I just rented a house in Montego Bay. I'm a young 40 year old with an 11 year old daughter and a Jamaican husband, Would love to meet other expats.
Also - I'm trying to start a business here. I want to open an Ice Cappuccino shop - what do you think of that idea?

Jamaica: Call me crazy...:
I lived with my Jamaican husband in Canada for 2 years until he was recently sent home. I am moving to Montego Bay at Christmas. We rented a nice house and I am planning on starting a business. I have some nervousness - I have an 11 year old daughter and I'm trying to get her into a good school... and I am praying that my business goes well. Overall I am excited. My family thinks I'm crazy but life is an adventure. Can no wait for this experience!
Jamaica: Moving to Jamaica in 2014:
I am from Toronto and married to a Jamaican. I am moving down in January and we'll be staying in Montego Bay. I am 40 with a 11 year old daughter. Would love to talk to others moving down or who are already there.
