Mexico: Expats living in Merida:

This place is a good starting point, not the cheapest but nice location and decent value. http://www.suitesdelsol.com

Guatemala: Magic the Gathering:

It is a card game that started in the early '90s that now can also be played online. Tens of millions of people play all over the world and there are also many collectors of the cards. There was a movie being made buy Fox but I am not sure if it has been released yet.

Mexico: cancun:

have you looked at internations.org they have a group in Cancun.

Mexico: Ebooks in Mexico:

I use Overdrive all the time from Merida through the King County /Seattle library system, works fine, Internet is great here but I have also used in smaller towns and while traveling, no problems at all, file size of books is small so doesn't require anything special.

Guatemala: Bourbon:

I assume you are mean any sour mash like Jack Daniels and not just Bourbon. It is available but only the top shelf stuff, it is pricey and hard to find. Actually any whiskey except for scotch is rare. If you order a whiskey and anything you will most likely get scotch. Legally you can bring in up to 5 liters. The airport only sells duty free for departures so that is not an option. It has been a couple years since bothered with it so might have changed. My recommendation would be to nurture a taste for dark rum, lots of good options available!

Mexico: Arriving near midnight Guadalajara - best options to get to Lake Chapala?:

I wouldn't worry to much about traveling at night, those warnings are crap, look up the UK gov web site about traveling in the US, says the same things that the US says about MX. However for a bit less stress I would recommend just staying at the Hampton Inn near the airport. You are coming in too late for the shuttle but a taxi would be fine, 10 min ride, about 60 pesos, room is kinda pricey 125/150 dollars but in your situation I think it would be worthwhile, mornings are beautiful and arriving at the lake will be much more tranquilo

Mexico: Merida for thanksgiving:

Hotel Santa Lucia right across from Parque Santa Lucia is pretty nice for about 500 Pesos a night. They have a Thanksgiving meal at the Fiesta Americana Hotel that is real nice but if you are wandering around the peninsula, my favorite is Habeneros Bar in Puerto Morelos, a lot cheaper too!

Mexico: Immigration attorney recommendations:

Unless you have some kind of special situation you don't need an attorney, I just went through it at the consulate in Seattle WA. Great people and real quick and easy.

Guatemala: Criminal Background Check for Residency:

Mexico does not require any background checks and although I am just starting the process, it seems like Guatemala will accept a report from mexico. Looks the clock started for their report from the date that I got my permanent resident card so I "lost" a couple of years while doing the tourist visa dance.

Mexico: water progresso/ telchac:

The water on the QR side is a bit clearer, area around Progreso gets the sand roiled up a bit more because there is no reef.Maybe a bit stronger and more consistent breeze on the Progreso side too. The reef is the big difference, if you are into diving and snorkeling there is no comparison, if you just like to swim and / or be near the water I don't see much difference,
