Germany: Moving to Heidelberg: Where to live?:
I lived in St. Leon (just outside of Heidelberg) for 8 years and loved it. Small town feel, yet only 15 minutes away. But, living in Heidelberg itself is quite doable, very easy to get around - will you want to be close to school or work is the main question?
United Kingdom: Living in uk:
Well, taxes are high - remember you'll be paying council tax even if you rent, and that there's an annual road tax, monthly TV tax. Make sure the school district you live in is accepting students - we found out the hard way that they are not required to accept you just due to your housing location.
Germany: Planning and packing for Cologne:
Wish I brought? Food mostly: Cheerios, mac and cheese, pluots, dried peaches, freeze-dried fruit, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, pumpkin butter, sun butter, certain kinds of crackers, salsa, chocolate chips, brown sugar.
What do you wish you had left at home? Tools and excess summer clothing; it never really gets all that warm here.
If you are partying in the streets only? Wear whatever you like. I just went to Weil der Stadt fasching parade yesterday, and anything goes!
Netherlands: A LONE IN AMSTERDAM:
Perhaps a meet up group? I travel frequently for business, I'm a woman (50) and could meet for lunch next time I'm in town.
United Kingdom: Education: UK primary school grade not the same as US grade HELP:
Yes, that is the correct primary school grade for the UK and a boy his age. You are lucky they are aware of the issue, I transferred mine - who were in 9th grade - and they put them in Year 9 when they should have been in Year 10 - but neither the school or I knew about the difference.
United Kingdom: Ship My US Car or Buy One in the UK?:
Buy one in the U K. I just moved here - it cost 2,000 pounds to modify my car. The headlights have to be shifted to point in the other direction, mine were Xenon so they had to be replaced entirely. Some older cars do pass inspection with black tape on the lights - most garages will do this for you for a nomincal cost. But I also had to replace the entire tail light assembly which was red instead of UK mandated orange. AND have a rear fog light installed along with an interior switch. Expensive!
Germany: Considering a Move:
It depends which base you are stationed on where the best area is to live. Patch is closer to Boblingen but the schools are a bit crowded there. Kelley is on the other side of town, housing is a bit cheaper there. Traffic is a bear in Stuttgart so consider commuting times carefully.
Easy to buy a car especially in the summer which is peak moving time -- if you live near a U-bahn stop getting around the city is very easy.
The actual PCS process is a snap. I've done dozens. Just be prepared for the packers and ensure they don't wrap your trash or frozen goods!
Panama: Moving to Panama Thirty something:
I lived in Panama for over twenty years and hope to retire there some day, it's a beautiful place - but, yes - there is corruption. I would still recommend it, there is an independent press. A good source for you to read is the Panama News: http://www.thepanamanews.com/
Panama: Happy Hour expat spots:
Try El Pavo Real - an low key gathering spot for expats. Owner is American/English. The bar area is the gathering spot, but the restaurant isn't bad, either.
