Panama: A New Home in Panama?:

Hi, we retired in Panama almost 9 years ago. We still manage to live here cheaper than in the US, but there has been a lot of inflation here because of the President, Martinelli, spending and borrowing too much money. Prices haven risen dramatically over the past 4 years. We grow a lot of stuff on our property, so we can keep our costs down, but I don't like this inflationary trend. Panama is most definitely not cheap anymore. Also, I would not plan to work here. Even if you could get hired, which I doubt, you would make unbelievably low wages. The services here are so so here, depending on where you live, not great. I am sorry I can't be more positive about Panama, but I want to be honest with you. On the bright side, the people are friendly, but the crime is increasing everywhere in Panama.

Panama: Looking to retire in Pedasi, Panama:

Hi, my husband and I live about an hour and half from Pedasi. How much do you know about Pedasi and what sort of life are you looking for? We have not been there in awhile, but my impressions are that there is not much around Pedasi and the area is very overpriced.

Panama: How far in advance to retain an attorney?:

WHOA You better be very wary of Panamanian attorneys. There are corrupt and/or incompetent. Don't ever give one power of attorney. We do have an honest one that we have had for 8 years. That would the be the firm called Business Panama - Eduardo.

Panama: Panama info, good bad,and the ugly:

I have lived in Panama for 8 years, 3 in Boquete and 5 on the Asuero penninsula. I agree that there is A LOT NOT TO LIKE, but we have finally found a comfortable niche. I do tell most of my friends not to come here and most of them that have visited don't like it here anyway. With regard to ROP titles, in spite of a 2009 law giving free title to properties under 5 hectares, the corrupt Panamanian Govt. wants almost $50,000 to title our land, clearly illegal. Also, the crime can be very bad. Our house in Boquete was robbed so many times that we moved. here we have no problems, but that is because we have guns and dogs so vicious that they would tear to pieces anyone stepping on our property at night. So I finally feel safe.

Panama: Playa Blanca Violence:

panamaguy, you are wrong on a couple of counts. First, the US invaded to get Noriega out because the canal could not be jeopardized. The US put tons of treasure and American lives into building the canal and had a right to protect it. Also, most Panamanians DO LIKE AMERICANS. I have personally heard many stories of people who had many, many relatives murdered for political reasons by Noriega. A lot of Panamanians wanted him taken out. I do agree that the US killed many more civilians than was probably necessary.

Panama: Playa Uverito:

Will you have transportation? I am not especially crazy about the food in Panama, but there are 2 restaurants we frequent at Playa Uverito and Playa Mensabe nearby. Stay away from one called Rincon El Faro. It is not the greatest beach. I think the worst thing is the incredibly loud music and Panamanian partying on the weekends. I think it is fairly safe, though. Parts of it are dirty and parts are clean. I live about 35 minutes away on a neighboring quiet beach called Playa Albina Grande. I would like to meet you.

Panama: Moving:

I would not come here if you need to work. Wages would be extremely low.

Uruguay: Moving to Montevideo, Uruguay:

I am a US citizen who retired to Panama 8 years ago. I could really relate to a lot of what was said about Uruguay. We have some of this in Panama also, but on balance, things sound much, much worse in Uruguay. I would not want to move there. People in the US have no idea how frustrating it can be to get the normal business of life done in foreign countries - NO IDEA. We have been through a lot of it. FOLKS, visit for at least a year before moving to any foreign country. It is not like the US. Take my word for it.
