Belize: visiting in January:
Hi
Sounds like you've got quite an adventure lined up!
My wife and I have racked up 1000's of miles driving all around Belize, which was certainly great fun (especially the Coastal Road between Dangriga and Belize City!).
When renting a car avoid using the rental business run by a chap nicknamed "short-change" in Belize City. Safest bet is to use the airport rentals or a credible company such as Avis. It will cost you less in the long run - trust me! Make sure you read the small print about the excess for accident insurance...
Stick to the main highways wherever possible. The four main highways are: Northern Highway (Belize City to Chetumal on the Mexican border); Western Highway (Belize City via Belmopan to the Guatemalan border); Hummingbird Highway (Belmopan to Dangriga); and Southern Highway (Dangriga to Punta Gorda).
The roads can have a white sheen to them which can be slippery especially after rainfall, so watch out for this!
Driving in the day is advised. At night driving can be a bit unnerving. Locals are known to speed, tailgate, flash their lights and often overtake on a precarious part of the road. Some Belizean driving seems a bit bi-polar when compared to the general laid back vibe of the country..! :)
So I guess it all boils down to planning your road trip in advance and being aware of the time dusk falls. If you do get lost the locals are generally helpful though!
Good luck!

Belize: 35 Years Old and Planning to Emigrate to Belize:
Hey all
I've been trawling the net for information on Belize and feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this site. Seeing as there appears to be a lot of members with a wealth of experience on the pro's and con's of living in Belize, I'm hoping a few of you could give me some further insight.
My wife and I currently live in the UK and due to my wife's continual health issues, we are now seriously considering emigrating to Belize to take advantage of the warmer climates and cleaner air. Our hope is that her health will improve sufficiently so that she can bear children...
My wife has dual nationality as she was born in Belize, and we have a huge family network throughout the country.
Our intention is to send my wife over for 3 months to stay with family - time enough I hope to identify if her health improves. In addition she can start venturing into the viability of relocating on a more permanent basis (location, work, medical centres, etc)
We have taken a tour of Sanctuary Belize and been utterly enchanted by the whole development, however as we have a limited monthly budget of approx. 2,500BZD per month for a mortgage and living expenses, it seems a little out of our reach at this time. I've noticed that the Hummingbird Estate has some affordable properties/lots, however the most cost effective option seems to be buying land/property owned by family as opposed to developers...
What are other peoples experience of moving to Belize?
