Germany: Planning and packing for Cologne:

Guten tag! We are moving from the US to Cologne. Expats: What do you wish you had brought with you? What do you wish you had left at home? Locals: We are considering Carnival costumes. We have read one MUST wear one. Is it even possible for expats to get into the parties and balls or will we be partying in the streets only? How elaborate should we be? Some can be quite expensive! The costumes in pictures online from Cologne seem quite different from what people wear for Carnival in Venice. What if we wore the same as they wear? Would that be incorrect? We hope to attend Carnival in both places over the next several years. Your thoughts and opinions will be appreciated. Danke.

Germany: Should we take US car to Koln, DE?:

As we prepare to move to Cologne, and we plan to live in the city, within the Hohenzollering-Hansaring, we are trying to decide whether or not to bring our 2010 VW GTI auto. We understand we will have to pay for a place to park it and it will have to pass inspection. We are trying to determine how much the inspection might cost us. Obviously we know the inspector will have to see our vehicle for an exact estimate but we cannot get anyone to even give us an idea how much we are in for if we bring the car. It is in perfect condition. It was manufactured in Germany to US specs. Several sources tell us that a number of things will have to be changed on the car to bring it up to German specs. Can anyone give us a list of those things that will require changing? Or a resource for such information? Can anyone shed some light on vehicle inspections, the process and especially the costs? And finally, who can you recommend we go to for our inspection in the Cologne metro area?

In spite of our president's lack of visible support, the American people are with you, France! Je Suis Charlie! We must unite to combat terrorism.

Germany: Prepping for Kolner Karneval:

After reading a bit about the celebration of Carnival in Cologne, it is hard for me to separate what is the "touristy" way and what the locals do. Is there a difference? I hope to participate in 2015-16 season and I want to be ready! What should I wear? Which parades are the best? Do they have balls like Mardi Gras in New Orleans (USA)? If so, how can one get an invitation? What are the costs involved? Any tips? Tricks? Thanks for your input!

Germany: Biking in and around Koln:

We are planning our move to Koln in about a year. We love to bike and wonder if we should bring ours or plan to buy there. Are there similar restrictions and licensing requirements as for cars? Will we encounter problems with repairs since our bikes have 27 inch tires? What about security? Is it reasonable to expect most apartments to have an indoor place to store the bikes? Thanks!

Scott I think you have the wrong Carolyn. I'm not in Turbingen area. Also I have no school information as I have no school age children. Good luck, Carolyn
