Costa Rica: Working in Costa Rica for 4/5 months:

depending on what immigration gives you upon arrival as a tourist - it could be a 30, 60 or 90 day visa...you will have to exit CR before the visa expires if you plan on staying for 4-5 months. it is not recommended to expect to find work without a work visa.

Costa Rica: Getting a dog in CR:

Kohl is ABSOLUTELY correct. My docile but large black aussie shepherd was macheted...by a neighbor. North of Domincal in Quepos is a CR non-profit org: PAWS -Pets of Aguirre Welfare Shelter (Mascotas del Refugio Animal Aguirre).

Costa Rica: Feedback on the best mountain towns:

Been here 9 years - started at the coast zona sur...too hot! Have lived in Heredia mountains since: Santa Barbara, San Isidro and now Getsemani/San Rafael. All very different climes, all stunning. San Isirdro has very clear air-due to its altitude (more rain, cooloer temps), Santa Barbara warmer and closer proximity to airport/highway; Getsemani just about perfect, moderate temps, more sunshine than San Isidro - rural but close to all points in Heredia. Note: if you plan on renting in the mountains, you want to verify that the house is grounded... if things like TV, computer, etc. is important to you.

Costa Rica: living accommodations:

There are many online resources for finding rentals, just be cautious with funds for deposits. Wise to get a written agreement (it will be in Spanish); pay monthly rent in dollars if you can and rent cannot be increased. I have clients in Jaco who have a small apt building just a couple of blocks off the main road. Contact them through their hotel site: http://posadojaco.com Ask to speak with Rob or Marge - tell them Rebecca referred you. Enjoy your life in CR!

Costa Rica: Any Aussies or Kiwis in Costa?:

I believe Outback Jack's is near Jaco on the Pacific coast. Also in Jaco an Aussie/Kiwi couple own/operate a Hotel/Apt: http://posadajaco.com/ They're great friendly, helpful people.
