No you don't...it's a question, not a request. They are more or less asking you, "do you want to register this buy with the government?" (Who the heck wants to register anything with the govt they don't have to??...there's no benefit to you.) Just say "não, obrigado(a)" and that's the end of it...less work for them as well. We never give ours (my wife is portuguese).

Portugal: Portuguese Accountant (Tax):

Hi group...Americano living in Serpa (Alentejo) looking to find a local accountant or a group that has a associate somewhere nearby (or even perhaps in/around Lisboa or in the Algarve) that has the know-how and capabilities to do US tax returns. As any American knows, accountants there charge an arm, sometimes a leg, and at least a few extra fingers for having to do it for someone out-of-country. And having to deal transocean is a hassle. Thought I'd ask here before asking the Embassy. Thanks...jt

Portugal: shell shocked!:

Hey Ojaisue...I'm an Americano married to a Portuguesa, living in Serpa (Alentejo) since Sept, 2014. I would highly recommend you leave your furniture in the States and come visit, rent, explore places and stores here first. Renting is relatively cheap, even in most places of the Algarve (compared with the States, esp), and esp. non-peak, as in not July or August. Then decide if the cost of shipping is worth it (vs the benefit and ease of selling your furniture off there and buying what you might need here). But I'd also recommend you consider the fact that Portugal is a small country, meaning that you can reach all kinds of beaches (including for example Cascais, close to Lisboa) in a few hours or less from all parts of the country. If it's the Algarve you really want, it's maybe 3-4 hours from Lisboa, and less from Baixo Alentejo or rural Algarve. It's not like the States. We lived in Cleveland, which meant at least a 10-12 hour drive to reach nice sandy ocean beaches. In Serpa, we're an ~1 1/2 hour drive from the warm water beaches of Monte Gordo or Albufeira or Portimáo (Algarve) or the slightly cooler waters of Zambujeira or Odeceixe (west coast of the Alentejo), for example. We can and do go for 1-day visits, spending a day at the beach with a cooler and a shelter, coming home in the evening. If you're retired (ie, location is not dpdt on work), live where you want and visit where and when you want. It's one of the advantages of this small country. The nearly universal advice remains good here--come visit and rent first. Then decide what you want and where....
