United Arab Emirates: Single American Woman on her way to Dubai?:

Hi I have been here since 2004, with my family which included two teenage girls at the time...they have past the teen years and are back in Canada....it is I think an excellent place to come especially if it is for 8 months then you will have nothing to lose? I would look at Dubai Marina or the Gardens as you would be close to certain night life and an acceptable GYM. Also depending on the time of day Sh. Zayed road will be the main artery for accessing other local spots. I have been washing my hair here for over three years and so far none has fallen out and I don't see a higher concentration of bald people here than other countries I have visited...so could be an urban myth on desal water... Can't really comment on the Jewish thing but I believe it is no problem...Isreali is quite different though and you will not be admitted if you have an Isreali stamp in your passport...regardless of religion... Getting the paper work sorted depends on how good the company is that is transferring you and how good the PRO public relations officer, is at handling the issues...can take two weeks can take two months you have to push hard to make sure it stays on track. Yes you need a license for Alcohol although in other emirates you can buy it without one...restaurants don't require you to produce a license in order to order a drink.. I really like it here, my kids had a good time and all in all I would recommend it.. If you have other questions I'd be happy to answer.. All the best, Steve

United Arab Emirates: Any Canadians working in UAE as Canadian Residents and Paying Canadian Taxes??:

Hi Beth, Not sure where you got your information but if you cut your major residential ties to Canada you can be declared non resident for tax purposes. This means no dependents, fully furnished house ready to move into car valid canadian driver's license etc. IF you go on CCRA website or get a GOOD accountant you will see there are ways to do this and not pay tax. The other important issue is to have no intention of returning to Canada as a permanent resident.

United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi or Dubai?:

I live in Dubai, but would prefer Abu Dhabi, only because of the traffic...it is getting very difficult to navigate and you have to prepare yourself in advance to go out...I mean figure out the high traffic times and such, this is due primarily to the construction boom. One caveat however is that Abu Dhabi may follow suit so it could get very hectic there. At present the downtown of Abu Dhabi has a sensible grid system for traffic and all the amenities you could want. The corniche is a great place to take walks and you have a great number of hotels and restaurants. Living in the emirates is great...you have a high standard of living and it is very safe....ofcourse if you are not on an expat package it is difficult due to the high cost of living. Hope this helps. Steve
