Canada: Medical Coverage in Canada:
Answers,
1. The private insurer will likely try their best NOT to cover your son. This is a hallowed treasured tradition for private insurers every where,
2. No.
3. Yes.
Welcome to Canada
Canada: Dual Canadian/US citizen:
Marriage to a Canadian citizen does not automatically confer Canadian residency or citizenship.
She must first apply for residency, meet those qualifications and receive same and then apply for citizenship after being a resident for some time. (1460 days presence over a 6 year period) . There are other details.
You can be her sponsor. for her to become a permanent resident. But see the special times for how long this step might take.
Ecuador: Wine Myths:
I failed in my approach to let Willie see the light. Pity as he seems a fine fellow.
Wine is a product that has gathered myths more then most..most of these perpetrated by wine makers trying to keep others away from their turf. (one of the most tragic of these battles threw France into decade-long a recession in the 1800s).
Those interested in the myth list can buy any of the books on the subject, many of which are available on Amazon.com. The minimum result is that you will be able to source and serve wine well.
One of the most prominent in every book is the 30-50 myth. But logic should prevail. Wine can be locally made wherever grapes can grow. (duh!) After all, would you be convinced if someone tried to tell you that cider cannot be made wherever apples are grown?!
By suggesting Salta is an extreme example, then what of the other Chliean region north of 50? Or all Peru, or the ex-50 regions in Argentina, the new growers in Brazil, or the Irish wineries, of the the entire industry England and Wales. The Belgium wineries, or the ancient German vineyards, or the incredible Swedish wineries, let alone those in Egypt and the new vintners in India.//all of them outside the 30-50 Yet we find no growers in Northern Quebec, or Newfoundland or the Canadian and USA mid-west. which ae within the 30-50. The answer is obvious.
Yet the world is changing..especially in agriculture and so are weather patterns. No one has made wine in the way Willie believes it is made in many decades. From the HUGE factory operations in Bordeaux to the 100s of family vineyards in Burgundy or the Sonoma it is all the same. The wine's acidity and sugar content is not left to chance..it is tested and adjusted. You can look as many "expert" wine tasters doing all sorts of ridiculous antics with a few drops of wine, but the owners religiously trust their $20 test kits.
Willie, you seem interested in the subject. Why not make some wine of your own to get a practical direct knowledge it? Or why not take some free tours of the finest wineries in the world..Fun stuff.
Where grapes are found, wine can be made, where wine can be made, good wine can be made. Surely, California proves that of it proves anything. It is all a question of expertise..and expertise can be bought or even found for free on the internet For that matter, any grape can be grafted onto another vine.
Ecuador: staying in ecuador for 6 months:
Wow. There are 12 Ecuadorian consulates in the US. Are you saying none of them will issue you a Visa..only the Embassy?!! That is unfair.
In Canada, either the consulates or the Embassy can give you a visa.
Other than that, how are the Ecuadorian visa needs different in the US? We have a stream of people coming to visit, from the US as well.
Ecuador: Best Pain medication available?:
Drugs, worldwide, are priced at whatever the local market will bear..(which is a function of local laws and the frequency of prescription). Its regulatory regime and prescription habits make the USA the most lucrative market in the world. To protect their profits there, the drug companies will give a different marketing name to most drugs. Your best course is to simply find the local South American name and format for whatever has been prescribed for you in the US. Often, a big Ecuadorian pharmacy will be able to help you with your list..but the internet is a godsend. (For example, an internet search reveals that Klonopin is a name used only in the USA..in SA it is called Rivotril. Pharmacists are also more casual with the need for a prescription and you will find prices are much lower. Just triple check the dosage.
Additionally, diabetic conditions, unless one clings to the same foods and their preparation as used in North America, will normally abate in Ecuador. So monitor yourself carefully and reduce or eliminate your meds for this condition as merited. You will probably have to restart when you return North for more than a short stay.

Ecuador: how to get residence visa ?:
Actually, Hwy101;
1. my name is Lorne not "Lorean"
2. gdean was "offered" a job teaching dance in Manta and has not taken it yet. My sole recommendation is not to buy property there before she has experienced other places.
3. I know the Macedonia area of Greece well AND I know Manta. I am very concerned that her impression from travel brochure pics will match the reality. Do you wish to argue the degree of performing Arts expression in the 3 cities?
4. gdean is not a "he" she is a she. ;)
5. Your gratuitous aggressivity suggests you started on the bottle at a hour that promises a bright future for Ecuadorian wine that I referred to earlier.
(I was hoping you were coming back with OceanHideaway's bagel recipe)
Ecuador: Farm/ Hacienda opportunities:
(smile) I will vote for that succinct explanation of immigration. I have seen too many expat destinations ruined by expats. Why leave if your only goal is to recreate what you have left yet again? Isn't that called infection?
Ecuador: Moving stuff:
Unless they are traveling business or first class..their limit is 1 checked bag each plus carry-ons.
Ecuador: Business ideas for an older Gringo:
"In Salinas you can get a truck any day to deliver almost anything for $7, no problem."
That has been our experience in Cuenca on the dozen or so times we have needed large deliveries. Quantity and distance are the price factors 5-10$
If it becomes a regular thing, it is more convenient to buy a vehicle. One is pretty restricted in Ecuador without wheels.
