Panama: Panama ranked one of the most corrupt countries in the world:

Wow. I don't know if its funny or sad. A conversation about whether Panama is corrupt or not (show me a government that isn't corrupt) morphs into a moronic statement like the GOP and Tea Party want to take the US back to the 30's....whatever that is supposed to mean. Are we suggesting that ANYBODY wants another great depression? I would ask for evidence of such a mindless assertion but it would be a waste of time and again, irrelevant to the topic.

Panama: Abduction in San Carlos & Theft:

This incident along with all the other discussions of crime and the fact that the locals keep to themselves (translation: unlikely to make friends) is giving me second thoughts about Panama. We visit Mexico 2-3 times a year. The people are wonderful and we have never felt unsafe or had a problem. I don't want to be anywhere that I am looking over my shoulder and I am not welcome.

Panama: The perfect place in Panama:

I have a fantasy. It is a part of what I dream of living in Panama (or any other far away place). It looks like this: my wife and I live in a small, quaint town but it is big enough to have all the neccessities including quality medical care. It is usually sunny but not too hot. A sweater at night isn't so bad. We pay $500 a month to rent a clean, modest house in a safe neighborhood. The beach isn't too far away. Of course, the mountains are everywhere. We walk into our favorite restaurant or watering hole and the owner welcomes us with a smile. He/she knows us by name and is happy to see us. Between our terrible espanol and their terrible ingles, we carry on happy conversations. We know our Panamanian neighbors and consider them amigos. We also have expat friends....one needs familiarity. There is a town square where families gather on Sundays after church. We can walk the streets at night. Oh, yeah...I want a motorcycle. I wonder if there is such a place.

Panama: Pensionado discounts:

I read about all the discounts that are available and wonder if they are "real world". For example, do all restaurants offer discounts? (I am not sure I would want to offer 25% off if I am running a small eatery trying to make ends meet.)What airlines are discounted? Hotels? etc? Anyone out there taken advantage of these discounts? Thx.

Panama: The future of the dollar in Panama:

One of the reasons my wife and I are looking to move abroad is the uncertainty of the US dollar. Given that it is the currency in Panama, what will happen if it collapses or at least loses it's reserve currency status? How will that affect the economy and quality of life in Panama?
