Ecuador: Criminal Background check:
I know where to get it done, but they asked me if I wanted the search done by name/birthdate, or by fingerprinting. I could get both, but I'd pay double.
Can anyone tell me which is the proper mode for me to select? Many thanks in advance.
Ecuador Welcome Forum: Urgent question...:
I know, all of my questions are urgent... but my timeline is very short, so I hope you'll forgive me.
Question: Does income verification that's sent to the consulate (as opposed to hand-carried or some other method) have to be apostilled, or are the mutual certification process by both institutions (source of money and Consulate) adequate? I do understand what all needs to be notarized using one trick or another now, but the apostille? Necessary?
Ecuador: What's the best VPN program for watching Netflix, Hulu, BBC:
I've been looking at VPN (virtual private network) options to be able to "chunnel" electronically to here, there, and other places to be able to watch Hulu, Netflix, and net content that's just isn't available to you if you don't have it. I want it to at least be able to access US content, and, ideally, the UK too.
So fess up. Who's using what application, and do you have an opinion on which VPN gives you the most freedom, speed, and and privacy for the buck?
Ecuador: Urgent - Military Retirement Verification help:
Hello. I spoke for about 90 minutes with the people at DFAS today, but absolutely could not get them to notarize my income verification letter. In fact, I'm not even sure if the letter described will do the trick. I plan on calling back tomorrow and hounding them until they submit, but a couple of urgent questions (hopefully with answers) for you:
1. Does the income verification have to be notarized, or does that depend on the state doing the apostille? The letter is coming from Ohio and I live in Colorado. Colorado won't apostille the letter without it being notarized, so hopefully Ohio will do me a solid.
2. OR... since it's coming from a Federal agency, does it have to be apostilled by the US Secy of State???
3. Any military retirees out there who fought this battle and won??? Please let me know how to tackle this effectively, because DFAS is being real ugly with me.
4. Once it does get apostilled, does anyone have a recommendation for which consulate to send it for their certification process? I only ask because I called one today, asked if anyone spoke English, and they hung up on me. :-/
5. I DO have a notarize verification of receipt of VA disability income. Any idea from you Veterans out there if they will consider that as a "pension" of sorts for purposes of getting my visa? My pension itself is enough, but if there's a way around dealing with DFAS again, I'll take it.
Thank you very much in advance. Your prompt replies will buy you a lunch when I arrive in a few weeks. :-)
Ecuador: Ecuador: Retired Expat couple victim of Home Invastion:
Can you use a self-defense baton (the telescoping metal ones)?
If so, can they be brought into the country, or are they available there?
Or is it Louisville Slugger time???
Ecuador: Sorry, I meant to ask this with the "electronics" query:
I have USB memory sticks, some SDHC cards, AND several external hard drives. Can anyone please clarify the requirements/restrictions on these items?
Ecuador: "Prescriptions" accompanying medicine I bring into the country:
Can anyone clarify this for me? By "prescriptions," do they simply mean the labels on the bottles, or the actual prescriptions that were written to obtain the meds in the first place? And with either, is it required they be translated into Spanish?
Thanks in advance!
Ecuador: Limits on Electronics? (bringing via suitcase):
I've been reading various sources regarding what I can and can't bring into the country in my luggage. Here's one line I could use some help with: "Maximum 6 memories digital camera, computer or mobile devices including cellular phones, except those that come built into the equipment mentioned above:
"Memories?" Are they talking about USB memory sticks, SD cards, both, neither? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as well as a better translation of this overall list, if one exists. My travel date is fast approaching, so I'd be extremely grateful if I could get a somewhat speedy response. When it's my turn, I'll certainly pay it forward.

Ecuador: Drum Circle, anyone?:
Djembes, congas, bongos, ashikos, etc... pretty much any type of hand drum or percussion instruments are welcome. No kit drums... they just don't mesh. Didg's and flutes and other instruments that you can play well enough to blend with the drum rhythms are cool too. I'll be down there in about a month and looking for recruits. If you've never done it, it simultaneously raises a mess of energy, while at the same time putting your mind in this relaxed zen-type mode. If you have done it, you know what I mean. I know a drum-maker in Cuenca, plus they're available in a shapes and sizes online. I have a couple of extras I'm going to bring with me, so if you're the least bit interested, please send me your contact info and I'll be in touch in a month of so.
