Dominican Republic: Hope you all are ok:

Hi lt. Yes it is bad but I've not seen loss of live. Lost homes and belongings. I'm sheltering way more then I should but never more then I can handle. Roads, the only way to transport food and goods are quickly failing. We are down from 5 N/S roads to 2 with the main POP road is closed as we talk since one side is gone and don't know if it will open again. Only roads open... sort of... are perhaps Gasper Hernandaz ?? or all the way to your area. Is that road open? TY.

Dominican Republic: relocating:

Sosua could use a good hair person for expat women and MEN. 2 others did very well but somehow they messed up their own business and left after several other expats, wife and self included, got fed up and found others though not in Sosua. Rents should be reasonable and you could have your shop in your home with appointment only. Our hair person in Caberete is good and she charges ... but we get what we want and like so no problem.

Dominican Republic: areas with calm water:

Depends on why you want? For your boat or what? Sosua can be great but storms happen as we are having now with large surf as is most of the country. Someone saying that "we have calm surf" becomes totally an unknown as well as your question. areas with calm water?

Dominican Republic: Are the crimes in north coast increasing ?:

This topic has been posted on another sight with lots of input both real and not. As for the person that asks for details and confirmation it is easy to find with very little effort. As an expat in the D.R. for almost or over 20 years, I watch, read, talk with others and try to understand the crime problems. Years of interaction with locals and expats. Some not even born when I moved here. The changes in culture and frustrations are sometimes obvious but most are not. Those that are not have lead to more aggressive behavior. I'll try to address this topic from a POV of 20 years in the D.R. at a later time.

Dominican Republic: Rental on North Coast:

I'm sure that you will get some responding.... that are trying to sell you something. You understand since you are a "Broker"? Most areas have at least one internet provider and many have 2 or more and should not be a problem finding those areas. But without any other information no one can get close to helping you. Other then those that are trying to sell you something that promise everything.

Dominican Republic: Cat from US:

Planner is correct. Check with the airline, they should have the requirements. As I remember from over 15 years ago bringing in our 2 cats. Had list from airline and must have vet sign off no more then 2 weeks before entry. Make several copies. Pre-filled in forms provided by airline. We also had sedatives for the cats and a small squeeze bulb for giving them water. Full cat harness and leash. Boston to Miami to POP so we found places to let them out, drink and another 1/2 pill. 2 approved soft cat carriers that would go under seat and reserved with airline. Most do not allow more then 2 animals in the cabin at a time. Check that IF needed, the flight has an approved live animal area in cargo. Customs should have a copy of the Vet papers from the airline and you will be required to check in with the customs/vet office with your cat. Normal for them to take some time.... waiting for a "tip". Hope this helps but please double check since this was over 15 years ago.

Dominican Republic: Rental realistic?:

Cost depends on the place and Your needs determine the place. Sort of. A little more info from you would go a long way. How many people? Will you be needing extra rooms for visiting family/friends. AC? Pool? Animals? Special needs? "guest friendly?". You have a car/motor for shopping or walking? Elec. included? Maint. for grounds, interior and pool included? Cable TV and WiFi? Sounds complicated but long term rentals usually are treated a little differently then the 1 week/1 month tourist. We have had a few that rent every year but they will not be returning due to the Canadian $ has gone bad for them. BTW. We don't let anyone comment to the next year until they are just about to leave the current visit then a deposit is made for the next time.

Dominican Republic: Water and Electricity:

With over 20 years here, we have seen a lot of changes that have affected just about everyone everywhere. From good water supply to none. Elec. became better to now going to poor again. What you have now you may not have next year. Water. Areas will differ in the amount of contaminants found in the water and trucked water is no better. Never drink from the tap. Keep your mouth closed in the shower. I would not brush my teeth with it. Use a sanitizer agent when washing food, dishes and wiping down counters. Most have water storage with houses using cisterns mostly. They also use rather primitive in ground septic tanks that drain into the soil and can leach into a cistern and well. My area has not had city water for 3 years. Many wells drilled; over 30 within 1/4 mile of me, with the same results of very bad water heavy in salts with PPM over 2000 and heavy with bacteria. Indoor plumbing corroded very quickly. Pools could not be kept clean. Laundry problems. Plants burned and died. Could not be used at all at some places. Most of those wells shut down within 2 months. When we built, we installed filters and UV to provide potable water to all indoor plumbing from our cistern. The cistern gets a pool chlorine tablet once a month to keep that clean. 20 years and we nor or guests and animals have ever had a water born problem. We had a lab test it every couple of years and is always over 99% pure. This is not a real expensive water system and it sure beats hauling 5 gallon jugs for people, dogs and large animals. The well we put in needed another set of filters and a UV lamp. We then put in 3 RO units that provide 500 gpd each that goes into our cistern and then treated again with the older system. This setup was costly but when you have NO WATER at all, you do what you need to do. We also installed rain gutters and use a leaf eater /catcher and first flush system in the downspouts that are plumbed directly into our cistern. Remember that we have the filters and UV so that water is treated along with all of the water. We did sanitize our cistern after getting some very bad trucked water. If you install a whole house system like ours, we will need to sanitize the cistern AND all the plumbing to insure that baddies are dead before drinking the new clean water. I'll post about elec. later.

Dominican Republic: safety and internet:

My wife and I work via internet also. Claro has become rather unreliable so ADDED DeLancer also with an automatic switching box we ordered from the U.S. One goes down the other kicks in. If you don't want the box then when you go down, just plug in the other. I'm sure that other areas that don't have those providers will have similar options. You will have to figure out if the area you will be in in safe to jog and I would imagine that you will not have anything of value on you other the some water. Being alert of what's going on around you is very important and know when to move to the other side of the street or change direction.

Dominican Republic: Moving to DR with dogs:

Finding a place to rent should not be a problem. Finding a landlord that excepts what your dogs may do may be a problem. It depends on your dogs. Barkers? Diggers? Howlers? Pee in the house or on plants that will suffer? Quick to bark at any noise or anyone near? Who lives next door that might become a problem? We have horses, a donkey and now 3 dogs. One died this week from Ehrlichiosis. A tick born virus that we just learned about the hard way. The remaining 3 have tested positive and being treated as well as our horses. You having an animal background should understand that animal care is a must at learning about new possible problems. Having a "poison kit" also is a must. We have had our dogs poisoned and died via rat poison in meat thrown over the wall to kill them to rob us. OK. I'm a little upset with the passing of our dog and treating the rest. And yes... we have a very strick flee/tick and everything for our animals. But this one just came out of .. ??? I suggest that you find a rental and get all the information and legal help BEFORE you sign a lease and BEFORE you bring the dogs. Good luck.
