500k/month!!! Wow. That's about 3/4 of a monthly salary for most Colombians.

Colombia: how to get my money here:

hi.. very long story short... i fell in love with a property and need to wire money here.. 3 attempts 3 fails..all with banks..i have proof of how i earn my income, bank statements, and all docs required... my next steps are to visit moneygram and western union tomorrow to inquire info such as transfer limits and fees.. I do not have a cedula yet and that kinda makes it all a bit more difficult.. i'm thinking of wiring money to various friends in much smaller amounts... any info or advise is welcome... Gracias

Colombia: K1 fiancé visa question?:

I am trying to find out how long it will take for the entire K-1 process to go through. I keep finding varying information online and cannot quite decipher. From the time of filing to the time when she can visit the US how long am I looking at? I am currently living in Colombia half of the year and I am buying a farm in the next month or so. The other half of the year I work back in the states and would like to take her with me. We do not plan on marrying soon so that's kinda off the table.

Colombia: Don't walk alone at night:

After watching Noah tonight,,, I decided to walk a bit. Bad idea!! 3 men jumped out of the shadows, grabbed me, held a knife to me and took my cell phone. What they didn't know is that I carry brass knuckles (habit from growing up in the hood). The 2 who had knives took off running so fast leaving their cohort all alone in front of me. Well as it turns out he wasn't able to get away like his buddies. I cracked him one so hard I'm sure I broke his jaw. If you see someone with their jaw wired together walking around, remind him it's not nice to steal.

Colombia: water shortage:

I do not watch news and was not aware of this,,, but my shower has been at a trickle for 3 days now.

Colombia: Safety in Bogota:

I always hail cabs off the street with no issues. It is cheaper to take the Transmilenio however as the stops usually can get you within walking distance to most anywhere. Use common sense, don't carry too much cash, passport, or credit cards on you. It is very seldom you need your passport or cards here so only take them when needed. It doesn't hurt to have some self defense training too. Thugs pick off the weaker easy targets. I know for a fact I've been sized up a few times but I walk around alert and will stare back at anyone giving me the eye and they will always back down. Those bad elements search out easy fast prey so just keep your eyes open and keep alert. Don't walk around with your head glued to your cell, and avoid speaking in English in public so as not to draw attention to yourself until you feel comfortable. But honestly,, I feel safer here than I do in the neighborhoods I grew up in back in Las Vegas and Albuquerque.

Colombia: Culture shock:

Lol. Took me some time to get used to as well. Just start doing it too. It's like my friend here says "Nosotros Colombianos, no respetamos a nada"

Colombia: Alone at carnaval. Anyone wanna hang in Barranquilla??:

Heya,, I am attending carnaval alone. It doesn't quite take up a full day and I don't want to go home right after the festivities. Does anyone want to hang out after the street festivities. I don't drink so boozing is off the table. Let me know. Jesus T.

Colombia: Banks & Cellphone:

Banking: Open a charles schwab account online. All ATM fees are refunded at the end of the month. Zero international fees. The only other card with zero international fees that I know from my extensive research is chase banks credit card sapphire. I use both and an additional chase debit account with no card,, but linked to the schwab account to deposit a minimal amount of funds so the card isn't loaded. This way you are never left stranded without funds should things go wrong. Don't suggest carrying cards either. Just keep withdrawing cash close to home. Cell phone: there is a difference. Go with Movistar. I have a good friend here who is literally obsessed with cell phone tech. He can hook you up if you need a phone or service. He unblocked my phone after it was supposedly done back in the states and got me a cheapo make to use while in public so I'm not flashing a new iPhone 5 around the city. Private message me if you need his contact.

Colombia: moving to bogota soon, have some questions...:

Word of advice. Pay the extra bag fees and bring your stuff with you. $50 for an extra 50 pound bag,,, or $80-100 for a tiny box to be shipped here weighing around 20 pounds. I wish I had just brought my extra stuff with me. You can use post office website to calculate your shipping cost. That budget is fine. I live very comfortable off less. And I also eat tons of meat. I even found the only place in town I know of where you can buy ribeye and T-bone steaks. Teaching jobs are easy to come across. El Tiempo news paper. No need for electrical converters. Peanut butter is easily available. Ask for "crema de mani". Optimum nutrition 2lb whey is whey too f-ing expensive. It's roughly $50 compared to $28 I was paying on amazon back home.
