Uruguay: Organic Farmland:

I know there is gmo soya grown around Colonia and Paysandú has vast fields of corn which is probably GMO. I understand the wheat is not GMO but the standard over- hybridized wheat with high gluten content. This is good news that UY will be labeling gmo! I do understand the large farmers wanting to plant gmo corn/soya look for large tracts of fairly flat land. Perhaps the hilly rocky areas deter them and are safe. In any case, if you ask them if their corn is transgenio, they may look blankly at you and not understand any difference. So someone growing corn near you, just plant your heirloom corn a month away from their plantings and avoid pollen contamination.

Uruguay: Escaping the US:

I know a woman who lives in Vilcabamba. She loves it. Her only worry is a possible dictatorship and how she is instantly recognized as a gringa. But it is beautiful and at a lower elevation than Cuenca. The higher elevation like Cuenca is said to be very drying to the skin. Cuenca also has a huge secure and sustainable compound that has property offerings. It's lovely there, I agree. Much to consider.

Uruguay: bank recommendation:

No matter which bank you use, ALWAYS keep track of your deposits and withdrawals. Don't trust the banks. There have been documented cases of bank embezzlement here.

Uruguay: Move to Uruguay:

I came for the beer.

Uruguay: Banks accepting Social Security:

There are both in Rivera but I don't believe BROU accepts SS. BBVA does accept SS.

Uruguay: Shipping Container:

Be very careful. There are those who will take advantage of you. I had a woman request a few items but ordered a lot of stuff and hers got loaded on my container and not enough room for my stuff. I had to leave a lot behind, but this woman who only wanted one or two boxes actually had a great deal more so limit people. You can give them x number of square feet and nothing more. Be strict about it. When are you leaving and do you know what port your container will go through? Mine went through Long Beach, Calif where it was seized by US customs, searched, stuff taken, demanded a $2000 fee to allow my container to move on, got lost then found in Buenos Aires where it sat for weeks. Customs have very sticky fingers. I hope you are using Uruvan here. They are top notch. Good luck and make sure your things are loaded first.

Uruguay: Cell Phone Availability:

I have found MoviStar to be the better choice. Claro has been the worse. Once my contract is up with Antel, I am moving back to MoviStar. I never had trouble with them in the past.
